Education Reform Update

January 4, 2009

Dear Colleague,

The Massachusetts House is on a very fast track to pass legislation on underperforming schools. This is the follow-up to the bill passed by the Senate in November.

As currently written, the legislation is a direct assault on collective bargaining and would strip teachers of their due process rights in cases of suspension or dismissal. Please DO NOT think that because you may not currently be in a school that is classified as underperforming that this issue does not concern you. The misguided notion that collective bargaining is the reason why these schools are underperforming needs to concern us all.

The bill will hit the House floor no later than Wednesday January 6. THE BILL WILL BE VOTED on Wednesday or Thursday. Please help us by contacting your State Representatives by visiting http://www.capwiz.com/nea/ma/issues/alert/?alertid=14359761&type=ST

Sincerely,

Lou St. John
