We strongly oppose the strong-arm tactics used in Central Falls, Rhode Island, where all of the teachers and other professional staff were summarily fired. Such tactics paint all teachers of struggling, low-income students with a Scarlet “F.” Not only is that grossly unfair to the teachers, but it also casts a dark shadow over all teachers who work with hard-to-educate students. There is no quicker way to discourage excellent teachers from working in these schools than to imply that they are all incompetent and threaten their livelihoods.
To borrow from a common quote, “Anyone can tear down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.”
