I make a lousy 51,000 a year before taxes. I have a huge school loan to pay off, a big mortgage, car payments... I am sick and tired of the sub standard times blasting the teachers of New Bedford. I am sure the writers of this rag make more than we do a year and work less time than the teachers. Teachers must work a 12 hour or more day-I do and we do not get paid overtime. WE pay and give so much of our OWN money to the kids. This is beginning to look like a smear campaign against teachers who teach 30 + class size, put up with kids who behave like bullies and don't WANT to learn and parents who give birth to MANY children but expect the teachers to bring them up. What a job-the way we are being portrayed by the sub standard times and parents makes me wish I didn't go into teaching. Lets switch places and you can teach 30 kids in a class and have to pay huge school loans that even a raise doesn't cover and not get ANY help. Then I can become a writer -a big mouthed ignorant fool.

It will take about $3.1 million to bring back the positions that were threatened because we opted not to take the wage freeze. The rest of the cash should be saved for the next fiscal year. We could see substantial cuts in Chapter 70 funding if Question 3 (the sales tax rollback) passes in November. Now that we have weathered this storm, it is time to prepare for the next attack on public education.

Anonymous, did someone put a gun to your head and force you to take out a big mortgage if you make a "lousy" 51k a year?

You sound like you might be happier teaching in one of the 'burbs. I'm sick of listening to teachers knock the families of NB. If the family effects of poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunity were so distasteful to you, why did you pick an urban district? Moaning about dysfunctional families-- of which a city with the demographics of NB has many-- does not get students educated. Extraordinary teachers, some of whom were just laid off, get students educated.
