Teacher Common Sense takes on Education "Reform" Nonsense - Living in Dialogue - Education Week Teacher

It just blows me away that we are still having these conversations about ed reform in this country. What, if anything, has state assessment done for any students? Regardless of how much data is collected over time, there will always be a 'bell curve' in which a certain percentage of students will score in the average range, with some scoring in the higher ranges and some at the lower end of the scale. It is impossible to derive anything else! It's Science 101! So, for the government and its committees to base our children's educational futures on such nonsense, it just doesn't add up. It seems to me that the people in my generation (ages 40 to 50) are getting by just fine with the educations we received, and we have social skills/scruples to boot because of the type of teaching and education that we received in the classroom AND at home back in the 1970's. What was so wrong with this picture that we felt the need for all of this NCLB nonsense? If anything, we are leaving more and more students behind (especially in impoverished school districts where many students lack desperately needed resources at school and the stability of a good home life). Teachers are constantly forced to
"teach to the test" rather than help students learn how to navigate through life by solving problems, develop peer relationships, and feel the triumph of a higher self-esteem. Smaller class sizes have been proven in study after study to be more advantageous to any student's overall academic achievement...has the government not seen these studies? What don't they get? And yet no extra funds are being thrown our way to lower class size...instead, if the student fails, it's all our fault. It's time to end this you know what, and fight back people!
