Candidate Mitchell unveils education agenda

Jon Mitchell's education platform is not very good for New Bedford's teachers. He speaks about more autonomy for our principals. The state already gives them enough power. Mr. Mitchell assumes that every principal is competent and a moral human being. If we look at Roosevelt and Normandin, we clealy know that is not the case. Mitchell proposes changes to the seniority based transfer system. If we open this door, it could lead to further erosion of of our rights under the collective bargaining agreement. Mr. Mitchell also advocates for an expansion of Carney Academy's home visit pilot program to all schools. Just how much time does he think we have? I'm already working 55-60 hours per week. When will I visit the homes of my 100 students? Mitchell would like to hire graduation coaches for the high school. Our system cannot afford to hire additional personnel. We are in desperate need of teaching materials and technology. I wonder if Mitchell will use these positions to reward campaign supporters. He did throw teachers "a bone" with his ideas to improve student discipline. While the Watchdog enjoys treats, the Mitchell agenda for New Bedford's schools has too many tricks for its teachers. I'm not impressed.
