St. John Votes Against Not So "Innovative Schools"

The New Bedford Educators Association is opposed to all efforts to create “Innovation Schools” within the New Bedford Public Schools. We believe that such institutions would cause irreparable harm to the district and the vast majority of students that it serves. Ultimately, as proposed, there is little difference between a charter school and a small autonomous school under the state’s Innovation School model.

Will these two say YES to more Art for our current public school learners? Will they say YES to better technology? Will they say YES to more MUSIC? Will they say YES to all the New Bedford learners in our school system?

While I do not always agree with Mr. St. John, I must say that he was VERY well-spoken as represented in this video. It is wonderful to hear the Union express that it supports progress and that is is exploring and supporting options that work within their contract and the current system. I also want to express the disappointment I felt in hearing that teachers were not allowed the two-thirds vote condition for the innovation schools. I personally believe that the teachers are vital to making any plan in the schools work, and without their support, any type of change is destined for struggle. I wish you the best of luck in improving our schools and helping our students succeed in any way that you can. I'll be cheering on the efforts of the city from Connecticut. Thank you for your hard work.
