The Assault on Public Education:
Organizing the Fightback
Join us on October 13,
2012 as we discuss and form strategy to confront the privatization of public
education.The UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center and the New Bedford, Fall
River, and Taunton Educators Associations of the Massachusetts Teachers
Association, and the New Bedford Federation of Paras, Local 2378, Mass AFT as
well as the local labor council, unions and community groups, have planned this
conference to be relevant to local issues. Our teachers’ unions in the region
are under attack by proponents of charter schools. This conference will be an
important step in organizing a fight back against these well funded attacks.
We are also in the
process of reaching out to the United Teachers of New Orleans, the Chicago
Teachers Union, who are engaged in striking against these powerful forces, and teachers
from Lawrence, Massachusetts that have had a takeover of their
school district by the state and are now facing these corporate forces also.
This conference poses the question of whether
private interests be enriched by public education money through charter schools
and other forms of education privatization OR will we keep public resources
public to benefit all? Below is a chart from Labor Notes which illustrates the
amount of resources involved:

word on the street is that Craig Dutra from the Community Foundation (and Ed. Roundtable)is upset and trying to stop this conference... don't drink too much at the mayor's next function Craig, and maybe leave wifey home to watch the kids
