As students in the New Bedford Public Schools return to their classrooms for the 2012-2013 year, Whaling City Watch is pleased to honor the district’s teachers, paraprofessionals, nurses, guidance counselors, administrators, clerks, custodians, librarians, and media attendants as our latest Hometown Heroes! We hope that we didn’t leave anyone out. In short, if you work with our kids, or support those that do, we thank you.
Working in the New Bedford Public Schools is not just a job. It is a calling. The staff of the New Bedford Public Schools faces many challenges. Among these are a lack of resources, spotty parental involvement, a dearth of support from the school committee/community, and students in crisis. Despite these obstacles, the NBPS rises to the occasion. Stories abound of how teachers dip into their own pockets to provide classroom supplies. District employees also regularly donate food, clothing, eyeglasses, and time beyond the regular workday to help our kids. Our schools are not just educational institutions. For too many of our students, the NBPS is an oasis of tranquility, opportunity, and structure in a world filled with chaos.
While the blab sheet on Elm Street, charter schools, Education Roundtable, and UIA focus on the district’s shortcomings, we prefer to focus on its greatest strength: its people. Whaling City Watch will continue to be a strong advocate for our school system, its staff, and the children served by our New Bedford Public Schools. We wish everyone a great school year!
