Mitchel Chester's actions don't surprise me in the least. The man has never met a charter school that he doesn't like and he approves them in communities that don't want them.

The public hearing on this school was a farce. The decision was made before the meeting started. This is politics at its best.

Craig Dutra? Didn't I just read that his wife was in court this week for drunk driving? Didn't the police report state that he was in the car and also under the influence of alcohol? Why would the standard times go to him for an opinion on charter schools? Maybe they should have asked him why he allowed his wife to drive drunk putting everyone on that road in danger. Pillar of the community indeed!

Tom Davis doesn't want city on the hill here because they will siphon students from global learning.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that Jon Mitchell created the city on a hill problem. It was his desire to get rid of Mary Lou Francis that created this mess. He beat the school system so down that he attracted this school to set up base here. His letter to Chester meant nothing. It was all for show.

Thanks Jon, by the time you are done with us our city will be in ruin.

Mitchell Chester is so predictable. You can always count on him to screw real public schools. I guess that something both Mitchells have in common.

No surprise that the Brockton charter school was rejected. The new Ed secretary was the superintendent in bockton. Why would he want a charter school in his backyard?

The standard times must be thrilled that city on the hill will soon be here. Yes, they have yet been approved but we know that it's only a formality. Wink wink.

As the NBPS budget is watered down to fund charter and innovation schools, bob Unger can write articles about why New Bedford schools are failing. After all, we know that NBPS doesn't need funds to function.

Let's not forget that bobby protects another great charter school.

The global learning charter school is the best charter around. If you disregard the fact that they lose most of their students, they are the very best level 3 charter ever. Under the direction of "dr." Steve Furtado, they have successfully taken millions out of the NBPS budget. Now that dr Steve's son is in charge of the money at the school (no conflict of interest, I'm $ure) we can expect great things to happen at the school. Did I forget to mention that Lynn Poyant, mayor Mitchell's campaign manager, became the pr director immediately after he got elected? Or that her daughter works in Mitchell's office?

These are all coincidences and have nothing to do with patronage or politics. If patronage played a role then Marlene pollock's son would be getting a job there or at NBPS.

It seems that Marlene's son has applied for a job at nbhs. I'm sure that he is so qualified that he'll quickly turn the school around in a couple of days with the help of mommie dearest.

Ugh! Pollack's son at the high school? God save us a spy will be in our midst. I hope he doesn't get himself beat up by a student. And when he does, I hope mommie dearest explains to him that it's "just a part of their culture"

If they can find money to fund all these charter schools then where is the money to outfit the high school with the technology it needs? The people that run the show are running their own agenda not a public school system.

We already have a spy in the high school... Mayor Mitchell's plant.

I can hardly believe that Carolina got one year probation. Guess money and Boston connections will allow you to live above the law. If them people of Westport were smart, they should demand her resignation and question every move hubby Craig makes

Between Mitchell Chester and the members of the School Committee, who are Pro-Innovation Schools, we are doomed.

Here is a thought,Why not just wipe out the entire New Bedford Public Schools and create all these charter and innovation schools.

We can get rid of the School Committee and have the Standard-Times, Education Roundtable, UIA, Community Foundation, Greater New Bedford Industrial Park Foundation, and whatever other groups create their own schools.

Don’t worry about being certified as they will have their own standards for teaching after all they have all the answers without, many of them, ever stepping into a classroom to teach.

Here are a few suggested names:
Out to Sea School for those wishing to pursue a career in maritime, or offshore wind, P P Culinary Science School, S-T Journalism and Editorial School, GNBIPF School, Council Legislative School, Foundation Community School, Variety of Language School which will cater to all the different ethnic backgrounds here, Roundtable Education School, Community UIA School, just to name a few.
Why not add your own ideas to the list.

I am sure they will be approved without any fanfare by the state.
Don’t worry about the cost for these schools, I am sure that Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be more than willing to pay or give full grants for these wonderful institutions of learning.

For how long will the these foundations be willing to shore up these schools? I don't think it will be forever and when the funding ends these schools will be forced to depend on tax dollars alone. Then then the profits will end and the schools will close their doors. By that time the Public Schools will be decimated and once again Wall St. will leave behind bombed out communities.

If the Standard-Times thinks these charter and innovations schools are so terrific for the students of New Bedford, why aren't they endorsing these schools for the area towns--Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Freetown, and Westport. Just a reminder, some of these staunch supports of these schools, which take money from the NBPS, live in those towns. One would think that they would want the same "golden" opportunity for their students.
