A Rallying Cry... by Josh Amaral

On Thursday, a group of about 125 educators and union leaders met to discuss the problems presented by the innovation school proposals. Among the speakers were Lou St. John, NBEA President, Ann Sullivan of the MTA, and several members of the faculties of the Gomes and Roosevelt schools, the proposed sites of the “innovation.”
Many of the issues discussed echoed the concerns shared on this blog. Namely, calling the schools “cost-neutral” is disingenuous. Opening the schools will create a ripple effect across the district, resulting in disproportionate cuts to resources and staffing for those who are not “lucky” enough to be part of these new programs, which insulate themselves from any future circumstance that could cut back their own funding. Indeed, all twenty-six schools in the district could be burning, but rest assured that the second floor of Roosevelt and half of Gomes School will be immaculate.

The innovation, "I want everything for myself, screw you" teachers claim to be pro-union and all about the children, so why are those six #$@%s surrounding themselves with Craig, "I'll have another" Dutra, and Tom "Flipper" Davis, Kate "I love Charter Schools" Fentress and the rest of the roundtable zealots? In my opinion those teachers have $****d every child, teacher, and school in New Bedford.

Do they even know what they've done? I'm convinced they have limited intelligence. The BIG picture eludes them. Does Kate just jump from one school to another or is she still involved with many?

It is a shame that this city does not see the value in improving ALL city schools by providing teachers/staff with the resources they need to teach adequately in this urban setting. Special Education children are supposed to have a multi-sensory approach and assistive technology but we bring in our own personal IPAD or tablets to use with them. We also DIBEL on our own peronal phones, tablets or IPADs because the computers they have supplied us with do not work. Where is our planning time that they offered us in OUR CONTRACT? They are refusing this time even though it has been negotiated. Funny though, they are not backing out of our new Educator Evaluation. Why are we honoring that part of the contract? The expectation for teachers is incredible and the lack of support for us is frustrating. Most of us put our heart and souls into teaching working many, many more hours than what we are actually compensated for, with little thanks.

Yes, those three women know exactly what they are doing, they just don't give a damn about the rest of us.

I have to agree. Those women have surrounded themselves with the most anti-union and anti-public education people in this area. I pity anyone who ends up working for those *******.

Tom D is a data guy. If he lies 50% of the time about supporting COH and lies 50% about supporting NBPS, then he is actually telling the truth.

Those of us who know and love Tom Davis understand that you can't count on what he says.

He was against innovation schools and now he's for them. He was pro city on a hill then he was against them and now he's against them again.

His charter school is a level 3 school and he claims they are successful. How can that be? They lose most of their students. Kids who enroll at that place should be told upfront that they probably won't be be graduating from that place.

You just gotta love that ole boy.
