School Committee Answers Council’s Cut
A budget of $105M would have meant that in addition to the tw0-hundred plus cut positions and diminished programs slated for next year, we would have to close three elementary schools ($900k savings), cut all sports programs ($480k), eliminate all high school busing ($550k), and an additional 52 staff. The Mayor called this move untenable, and I agree. I don’t think anyone in the city can live with those sorts of conditions — conditions that would almost certainly land the city schools in state receivership sooner rather than later.
