Mayor Lang would not of handled this issue in the same way Jon Mitchell did. Mitchell said nothing and not surprisingly, did nothing. Lang would have taken a stand and the superintendent would have been the spokesperson for the school department. It seems to me that this "current" superintendent created the problem and handed it over to Heather Larkin to distance herself from it. So much for caring about our most fragile children.

Shame on Pia Durkin, the School Committee, and the Mayor for not providing adequate nursing care to all of the students of the NBPS. Same old same old excuse "no money in the budget." We have heard that "swan song" for decades, yet, this same Superintendent has hired a School Improvement manager for New Bedford High School! This position was NEVER, I REPEAT, NEVER, budgeted in the FY14 budget and advertised on the School Department's Employment website. The Superintendent somehow found money for this position but no money for the health and safety issues of students and faculty!! What were the requirements and job description for this position?

And don't forget the newly hired Asst. Supt. for Human Resources. We have money for these positions but not for the necessary things for our students.

Let's have another rally for the arts

I am one of those "arts" teachers and shame on people for slamming what we do!! We are teachers just like you!!!! I'm sorry that we specialise in something. I'm sorry that you only see us as prep time! I'm sorry that you think we have no merit and are not important! There are times ( more so lately) that I am sorry I became a teacher. How dumb of me to think that my own colleagues would respect what I do. Shame on me!

Durkin needs to bring back over 100staff that lost their positions. It is sad that nurses were cut and it is also very sad that over 100 teachers lost their job. Classes are huge, over 30 students in a period at the elementary, middle, and high school level. Everyone is suffering! These kids are not going to receive the education they need in a class of 30, IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. The idea that we are going to improve MCAS by 40% this year is incredibly funny and only someone that is out of their mind would believe this is even slightly possible with all of these new gigantic classes. You want results Pia? How about bringing back teachers. You will get ZERO improvement in MCAS scores with classes this large. And I sure don't care if the state takes over. I don't at all. You people act as though we have it so good right now and a state takeover would be devastating. Bring them in, at least we will be adequately staffed and funded. Our administrators treat us like crap anyway, our contract sucks, are classes are huge.....so this boogie man threat of the state taking us over means nothing to me.

A. Maximum Class Size
The School Committee and the Association recognize the fact that class size is of paramount
importance in establishing quality education. In recognition of this, the School Committee
shall strive for lower than a class size of thirty (30) in conventional classes. Where an
inclusionary class exists, the Committee shall strive for lower than a class size of
twenty-five (25) in inclusionary classes.
B. Review of Class Size
In the event that class size exceeds thirty (30) in number, (or in the case of an inclusionary
class, twenty-five (25) in number) the professional employee shall have the right, with the
Association, to meet with the Principal, or Superintendent, or both, to review this matter.

Specialize! Auto correct changed the spelling. I didn't want any of my colleagues to think "arts" teachers can't spell.

Let's march with a chant of "Please take us over-it can't be any worse!"

"Please, Please take us over we don't even have a nurse!"

As a middle school teacher, I think it would be great to use this blog to share information about our middle schools. What are the average class sizes from school to school Are valuable funds being spent on coaches and consultants instead of teachers? These are important questions. I agree with the person who said there is no way MCAS scores will improve if classes are too big.

takeover means contract goes in the trashcan.

Anonymous said...

The contract that cut our bonuses in half?

Anonymous said...

The contract that had NO raise at all for steps 1 - 11 over the next 3 years. That was not a raise at all. Instead a normal "step" increase was cut in half. So, basically we peons can beg to get half of a "step" raise that was negotiated 2 contracts ago. New Bedford has more money available in the school budget this year as compared to last year, yet we lost over 100 teachers. No class should have over 30 students in it, this is shameful. We can't help these kids in overcrowded classrooms.

The approved contact?

My anger is directed at the mayor and school committee who created this mess. To blame the contract is stupid. At least the person complaining about the contract has a job. I don't. I'll trade places with that person in a minute if he/she is interested.

We are fighting among ourselves. Within schools and within the union. This is exactly how management wins.

The genius who is pretending there is "more money" should not keep that level of intellect to themselves. They should join with the geniuses who want to throw out the contract and leave us at the mercy of Mitchel Chester.

Combined, they could fix it all.

Or is it all just online bluster from those who, as one poster has mentioned," have a job?"
