It is sad to see how our hard-working teachers are being treated by students and administrators .. By Natalie Freitas

Good manners are a prerequisite for education to take place. Inappropriate behavior and speech in a classroom are unacceptable. It affects all students. It's detrimental to the education of those students who want to learn. They are the victims of those who need to learn appropriate behavior in a school setting.

If these skills are lacking then the school should provide a classroom setting where students can learn them. We provide classes for the health of the body. We should also provide classes for the health of the mind.

Once appropriate behavior is achieved, then education can take place. The only way to improve our community is to start educating the whole person. Academics have to be taught, but it cannot be achieved if students aren't ready.

Please don't blame the teachers for the lack of achievement on test scores. Test scores will never improve if student aren't ready to accept instruction. It is sad to see how our hard-working teachers are being treated by students and administrators.

Natalie Freitas is a retired New Bedford teacher of 33 years

I agree but iut also starts in the Home ... Respect by kids is lacking because parents are not teaching ..respect and how to act in diffrent situations ..it starts with Parents parenting their Children . Among those things are respect ,and self control ,and discipline . not letting kids run their lives they are kids for god sakes, teachers don't need to be teaching these things Parents do !!

Thank you, it needed to be said. It has been out of control for awhile. The NEA calls teacher abuse a crisis.

Where are all the retired teachers? Why don't they ever stand up for their former colleagues who are still in the trenches? Stand up and speak the truth! Your pension is secure. You have nothing to lose.

To the post above, I am a retired teacher who has been attending the School Committee meetings and speaking out during the public comment section. I have also written several editorials supporting our educators. It saddens me to see what is happening throughout our district and reading about the assaults on teachers through this blog.

I urge you all to attend Lou's December 13 meeting and attend the School Committee meetings. Show everyone that you are not going to be intimidated. Begin addressing these serious issues. Looking forward to seeing you there.
