Dr. Durkin told principals that they gave out to many proficient ratings last year to teachers. Translation: to please the bully, principals will need to zap us.

My thoughts...NB teachers have many things in common with teachers across the state: Attended same colleges, received the same teacher training, continue to attend PD offered throughout Massachusetts, re-certify in the same way...and what we don't have in common: ART, MUSIC, PHYS ED, TECH...we also have a city filled with broken families, poor housing, drugs, poverty, and uneducated adults. We are more than proficient...we are MIRACLE WORKERS!

We earned those proficient ratings because we were doing our job. Who gives them that right to knock us down? To change our ratings at their whim?

I agree, we are miracle workers! All of the factors SHOULD be considered before the administration places the blame on the teachers.

I hope all my fellow miracle workers are in attendance on December 13th ... Together we can make a difference ... Together we can work HUGE miracles!!!

I feel more like a workhorse than a miracle worker, but yes, I do try to work miracles each and everyday.

I agree. WHen I talk to administrators from other districts, they beg me to get out of NB and ask..."How can you take it, the abuse and atmosphere both in the classroom and in the system?" Many of the teachers I meet are not good at all in other systems , laughed at by co-workers and students..yet they receive wonderful evaluations and have successful students who PASS MCAS. Yes, we work miracles...with the kids and just by the fact we SHOW UP to be abused daily from all fronts.

Teaching in New Bedford High School is an incredible experience! You are exposed to the entire community of social economic diversity and educational experiences. I love teaching at NBHS but I recognize that what I strive to do doesn't matter because it has become about percents and numbers. When does the human being become part of the picture? We are all different and diversity defines the human race!!!

Durkin refuses to acknowledge the diverse needs of our population and what that really entails. Support does not encompass threats or brutality.

We never set out to be heroes. We did what came naturally. Kids are our business and that means providing them with the best education possible in support of college and career readiness. It is that simple.
