Why should I attend the NBEA meeting? ... Submitted by a member

The very fact that teachers are facing physical assaults from those we have devoted our lives to educate is reason enough to attend this meeting. The fact that those in charge are either blaming the victims or discouraging victims from pressing charges is reason enough to attend this meeting. The fact that we are treated with disregard and considered dispensable is reason enough to attend this meeting. The fact that nothing has happened to you YET is NOT a reason to not attend this meeting. All we have is the strength and support of one another to sustain us.... Do not bury your heads in the sand.... Attend this meeting for every teacher and every student you care about, and God Bless Us Every One.

Anyone who doesn't attend this meeting out of fear of reprisal deserves what they get!

It is a shame. One of my colleagues was recently blamed for getting assaulted by another student. We are told to reach out to parents and they blame us for their child's behavior. I will be there and I am bringing an army with me!

This will never get published but here it goes anyway: lou stjohn is an ass. He should let the superintendent do her job and get rid of all the bad teachers.

It appears some people do not like to hear the truth. If we refer to a truth teller as an "ass" we might actually be a dumb*ss ourselves. Where are all these "bad teachers"??? Are they in the hospital after being assaulted? Are they working in resource depleted buildings? Are they giving up hours of personal time to attend unpaid meetings? Are they letting their emotional health be destroyed trying to work in Pia's Rigor Regime? Are they comforting children that haven't had a break from testing? Where are these bad teachers?

The parents gave birth to their children, the child is a reflection of what the parent has taught the child. If your child is violent, lazy , vulgar, .... It is not the teacher's fault-it is the parents fault. Teachers try their hardest to teach these children respect, manners, self-discipline , goals . Society has really fallen apart because the family unit doesn't seem important anymore. I am not a teacher , I am a parent . I see for myself everyday the ignorant behavior of some of these parents. It's no wonder their children act so poorly.

Very insightful parent there. It is pretty plain to see if you are exposed to it. As a teacher I really appreciate your post. Really boggles my mind that the "powers that be" don't see this. Instead of seeing it for what it is and dealing with it they deny and take supports away. What is left is pretty ugly.

If I ever got attacked by a student, I would press charges. Then, I would hold the parents accountable for their child's behavior and press charges against the parents. This must be a sore point with Pia, because she seems to be afraid to hold the kids and the parents accountable for their horrible behaviors. We need someone who actually knows how to be a leader.

I am usually not pro union person. We have to admit that there are bad teachers in our district . We have to accept the fact that something is not working and our kids are not succeeding. However, there is a storm coming and many of you are sitting by and watching your colleagues get affected. It will reach you soon--- you just don't know it . Wake up ! Line up one by one by one at that mic on Monday night during the SC meeting.

The truth is there are a few "bad" teachers in the district. We all know of one or two in our building. He or she has probably bounced from school to school and we wonder how they have stayed in the system. In most cases they are very nice people but they are not effective teachers. That being said, they are the minority not the majority. What is happening right now is happening to the majority and everyone needs to stand together. Changes need to be made for sure but this is not the way. How can we expect students to respect teachers when the mayor, school committee, and administrative staff do not respect them?

My first reaction when I read (and reread out of disbelief) the above comment about Lou St. John not allowing Dr. Durkin to do her job and fire ALL THE BAD TEACHERS was one of sadness. How sad for this blogger to be so limited in his/her thinking. . . . . . .almost revealing an Archie Bunker mentality! In every profession you will find "bad and ineffective" doctors, lawyers, politicians, policemen. . . . .and in the trade professions, plumbers, carpenters, and electricians. Before anyone stereotypes a whole profession, please walk in our shoes for one week to see what we deal with on a regular basis. Yes, many of our students have provincial or limited views, are vulgar, angry, lack manners, and view getting a FREE education a punishment. Will we ever turn the culture around in NB? I hope so. It begins at home with the parents or guardians stressing the value and importance of working hard and getting an education. From what I've seen after many years teaching at the school is many dedicated and hardworking teachers who really care about the students and their education.

When I've needed Lou he's been there for me, so if that makes him an @@@, so be it.

I have been an educator for many years. I still love my job. I have been witness to downtown administration forcing us to "dumb"down what we are teaching for many years. Now when things are awful they don't want to take responsibilty. I agree whole heartedly that we need to step up our game and increase the rigor in our classrooms. I think that is in the best interest of our children. However, we CANNOT expect them to rise up to work harder when many children are not being held to even the bare minimum of acceptable conduct. There is NO way possible to increase rigor without support from administration with regard to behavior. In addition, it follows that parents need to also support us to bring their children up to higher levels, not hold them down or make excuses. As I mentioned before, I sincerely love my job, please help me do it to the best of my ability. I can't do it if a small percentege of my students are so disruptive that I lose time on learning every day managing behavior that they KNOW will not be addressed. Help me teach our children. Thank You

Lou is not an ass. An ass is someone who does something without consideration for other people. Everything Lou has done to raise awareness about how teachers are being treated has been done with the best interests of the community.

Teachers are here to teach - not to serve as scapegoats for shitty parenting and decades of poor administrative choices. If you can't see that by now, then you are truly ignorant.

I strongly agree with the above post re. discipline. Until the administrators and superintendent figure out a plan how to EFFECTIVELY deal with the repeated misbehavior of certain students, no teaching or learning will take place in the classroom. Teachers can call parents/guardian and schedule an after school session with student, but the misbehavior resumes almost immediately. The superintendent stated that she wants the suspension rate to decrease but HOW? What is her plan to EFFECTIVELY deal with the problem? In many cases, learning is not taking place and more and more teachers are being assaulted. WE ARE WORKING IN A HELL HOLE! We need more ASA rooms in order to remove these kids from the groups of dedicated kids who come to school each day WANTING TO LEARN. WHY SHOULD THEIR EDUCATION SUFFER AT THE HANDS OF MISFITS?

Make no mistake of the importance of this meeting on December 13. The ability for members to show unity is tantamount. It is the body count and what is said at the meeting that matters and not the faces in the seats for those worried about their identity. Believe me when I say that a poor showing will ultimately lead to the end of your collective bargaining rights in the future, and you don't want that. Members, show your support and attend this important meeting.
