Mayor Mitchell thinks that the teacher's union has sunk to a new low .... Submitted to NBEA

Mayor Mitchell thinks that the teacher's union has sunk to a new low by announcing during the Holiday Season that it is withdrawing its support of the United Way. Really???? I guess he thought it was perfectly okay (not low?) for the Superintendent and School Committee to announce right before Christmas that the administration and 50% of the teachers at NBHS would lose their jobs? Is that his idea of spreading good will and cheer during the Christmas holiday? I am sure there were a lot of NB teachers who didn't have a very "merry" Christmas as a result of that announcement.

United Way has a rude awakening coming if they think the New Bedford teachers union is the only group boycotting. My family members work for a large area industry where most employees support United Way. My family members are spreading the word that no one should support United Way based on it's getting involved in a political battle and an add that must have cost around $1000 and guess what, not only are their co workers receptive to the United Way boycott, they are also willing to withdraw business from supporters of the Standard Times as well. It is surprising how many people are against this latest move of NBPS.

Mayor Jonathan Mitchell has made a mess out of the school department ever since he was sworn in as Mayor.

Does anyone remember his first meeting? At his first meeting, he announced to the audience that he "did not know Roberts' Rules of Order." I couldn't believe what I was hearing! One would think that Jon being a FFP would know the rules for conducting a meeting or learn them before his first meeting--he certainly had enough time.

Guess his study habits are like some of the study habits of our failing students--lacking. He also needs to take a course in Public Speaking as he STINKS at it with all his ums, ahs, and ums, etc.

Jon Mitchell is comparable to a keystone cop.

Long after the fire is out and the smoke clears, the damage will have been done. Wounds will heal but the scars will forever remain. The most important resources the children in our community had, will never forget the disgraceful way they where treated by this administration. Using the children they have worked so hard to educate, as a ploy for this drastic "turn around plan" will backfire. Although the teachers of our community will never receive the apology they deserve from the superintendent, mayor or school committee, I offer my sincere apology as a member of the community to the injustice they have committed against you. Today I am embarrassed to say I live in New Bedford. The school department will not accept responsibility for this failure. Accepting responsibility would only solidify what you already know. They are the reason for this mess. This superintendent herself said many mistakes were made at the central office and trust has been lost. This year many well educated teachers will be lost. A top heavy administration is not the answer. There are some among you who have forgotten your humble roots. Without the support of a strong foundation, you too will be caught in the collapse . Replacing the corner stones of the foundation with sand only increases its instability. The truth is, many members of this community are NOT in support of the thoughtless actions of those in office. We are well aware of your hard work and dedication. We appreciate the tireless effort and extreme commitment you have made for our children. Despite every obstacle placed before you, at no time have you lost focus of the bottom line....the children. YOU ALL KNOW THE TRUTH!! Do not let them try to take that from you. This is a poor solution to the mounting problems facing our city schools. In the end, the path of destruction left by this misguided attempt for change will be more costly to the citizens and children of our community, than the mayor, superintendent, or school committee could ever have imagined.

I was trying to find out how much $ is actually donated to local services from United Way as appose to how much is used for administrative purposes? There are many services and centers in which 100% of donations go to the cause.

For the member of the community that offered their support, I thank you. I thank you on behalf of all of my colleagues who, along with myself, continue to move forward and try to educate our children under these dire circumstances. When the superintendent claimed that there had been mistakes made at the central office, she was not referring to her tenure. She was referring to those that preceded her; Longo, Bonner, Francis and Shea. In her eyes, she is the savior who was anointed to bring NBPS out of the mire of ineptitude, complacency and financial mismanagement. St. Pia will resurrect the NBPS in her image. Not that she has ever done it anywhere else.

What a great idea ! Let s get public opinion on our side more by announcing we are going to boycott an agency that helps the poor ! That will surely get the public to believe the issues we face are real. It surely won't reinforce all the negative press we ve been getting. Oh -- our leadership is so smart .

I predict that Pia, like the other superintendents before her see the cash cow that is New Bedford Public Schools. Come here, get paid a boat load of money, institute whatever you want to "try out" because the School Committee is ignorant and will allow it, then high tail it out of New Bedford before your contract is up whilst still getting paid out the rest of your contract. Especially if this is the end of your career... Retire with a fat pension sounds nice! oh and who cares who and what gets destroyed on the way....

I thought Mike Shea made a deal with DESE Mitchell Chester on the attendance and discipline issues at the school? Didn't he tell Chester that we were instituting new policies and our numbers were going to go up as a result for a few years? Didn't Chester agree that it was okay as it was necessary to get a handle on those two areas? So what happened?

I don't trust the United Way. They have been in too much scandal over the years for me to donate any money to them. As for the person who believes they help the poor.... really? try researching them. See where the bulk of the money really goes. If you want to help the poor, become a teacher- educate them, vote, and volunteer you time at a shelter or food pantry. It will be much more appreciated.

We won't win in the court of public opinion...all the general public thinks when they see us is "they get summers off"

...and do firefighters get every day without a fire off? We are seasonal employees...we do not get paid during the summer unless we choose to be paid less during the school year. Let's educate---that's what we do!

Isn't it interesting that Craig Dutra(the drunken slush who was on that low speed drunken ride with his wife intoxicated at the wheel after attending a Jon Mitchell fundraiser) was the former CEO of the local United Way? How interesting too that there is a Michael Durkin who is also a CEO of the UW. May not be her husband but most certainly there must be some connection. It is all coming together now. Well now anyway, at least it makes sense. Now just how does Jon fit?
