To assume it is “mutiny” for the New Bedford Public School Teachers to speak freely at a union meeting is irresponsible, bias reporting on the part of the Standard Times ... Submitted by a member

It implies that an agenda for the future of NBPS has been predetermined and is non-negotiable.

These are the facts before us:  violence against teachers, specifically at the high school and middle school levels has multiplied exponentially in the past three months. Teachers are being terminated and disciplined more than ever before in the history of our school system.  School staff including (cafeteria, custodial, secretarial and paraprofessional) are emotionally distraught and are turning to area physicians, psychiatrists and EAP programs for assistance dealing with job related stress.

Let’s continue to investigate these facts.
The responsibility of the superintendent of schools is to provide students and teachers with a safe educational environment in which to learn and work.  The contract between the NBEA and the NBPS specifically states: “the NBEA and the NB school committee recognize that professional employees have the right to a safe working environment including the right to be free from threats and/or manifestations of violence”. Sadly, this is not the case in our schools.

The schools have become a toxic environment for students, staff and teachers – a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.  Should we analyze the variables, learn lessons and devise new solutions or should we “stay the course” as the Standard Times suggests???  These days, it seems imprudent and unconscionable to sit back and wait … “Real change is disruptive and difficult at the outset”…December 13th is the outset.

Time to cancel the subscription to the rag.

Why don't they focus on the poverty, drugs, and housing conditions in this city? The Education Mayor and The Education Media are ignoring what's really to blame. Our teachers are not the problem, and we shall finally speak up for ourselves on the 13th. We should arrive in even greater numbers after this final assault on our rights as Americans.

How ironic: a picture of Durkin at the top of the article that has the gall to threaten and intimidate teachers from not attending THEIR union meeting and fighting for THEIR rights! We WILL NOT stand for the abuse anymore! Durkin needs to understand that SHE needs us and we do not need HER!! No one wants to come to New Bedford to work for this corrupt school department. Substitutes don't even return anymore. This is the most toxic, miserable school year!

Today's article in the SS about Parker School, mentions teachers going to students' homes as a means of understanding what the students' lives are all about. So now I can fulfill my 40% gains for my evaluation, teach, assess my students' progress, analyze data, data, and more data, discipline, play mom and dad to my students, AND take on the role of social worker in my spare time??? Absolutely not! I am not assuming another role in the education process. SO looking forward to Friday, December 13. I will walk in with my head held high and hope Durkin is watching.

If anyone does not go to the meeting on the 13th after reading the article in the Standard Times rag today, they should be ashamed of themselves!! It's time for us to take charge and not be bullied any longer. Let's make ourselves proud!!

Thanks S-T ... Pretty sure your fine editorial piece served to fuel the oppressed educators who may have otherwise been reluctant to participate at the meeting ... See ya on Friday friends! ... If nothing else ... Go for the entertainment!!!

Yes...it should be like a family reunion...with all the patronage and all..Let's Celebrate the easy job we needed a godfather to get for us, the luxury we have become accustomed to, the fantastic resources...and the RESPECT--Oh the Respect! Let's protect our comfortable way of life--NO CHANGE! We fear it so.

A paper chooses its words carefully. They deliberately chose these words to paint an association of teachers as a mob.

Once again I ask, when will the editorial writers, Urbon, Unger, and DeArruda, of the S-T sub at the high school or middle schools to really get the full experience of teaching to these young students?

Oh, wait a minute, they will come up with some POOR EXCUSES as the Mayor did one afternoon on his weekly Phony Baloney Phil's show when asked to go into the high school and teach by a teacher from the high school.

I am not holding my breath waiting for this to happen as it is much easier for them to misinform the general public with their stories.
