Pia Plugs the “NEW” New Bedford High………Submitted by a Member.

Dr. Pia Durkin made an appearance at a New Year’s rally sponsored by the principal at Roosevelt Middle School.  Durkin used her remarks to promote the “NEW New Bedford High School.”

So, firing ALL of the teachers and making them reapply for their positions constitutes a new school?

How about the deteriorating physical plant at NBHS?  What will Durkin and Mayor Mitchell do about the poor discipline that has scared the good students away?  How will Durkin and Mitchell motivate those students who choose not to be actively engaged in their learning?  What measures will be in place to make parents and students accountable?  What new resources (texts, technology, and additional staff) will be provided? How will Pia and Jon mend the Whaling City’s social fabric that impedes academic achievement?

Dr. Durkin’s commercial was just another insult to my colleagues at New Bedford High School.  I hope you will join me on Friday January 17 at 3:15 P.M. Let’s fill City Hall Square to deliver a message to New Bedford’s Bonnie and Clyde.  WE will not allow them to rob New Bedford’s teens of their highly qualified, dedicated, and talented teachers. WE will not let them ruin our careers!

I’ll see you on the 17th.

Makes no sense. Maybe they are hoping to gain loyalty from the people who get hired back. Surround themselves with people afraid to say no. I have never known fear to be a positive motivator in the long term.

Thank you to the member who posted this. I was present at the assembly and it was hard to swallow. What an insult, "The New NBHS." The only thing that will be new are new teachers who will go home crying like the rest of us.

The mayor spoke for about 3 minutes and left. Then the superintendent did indeed talk about the NEW NBHS. Trust me, teachers looked at each other and cringed. NBHS Teachers, you are not in this alone. I feel that not only will most NBPS Teachers attend the rally, but many nearby towns will also be there. The power structure might have bitten off more than they can chew!! Hang in there everyone!!

Yes, he is a coward when he openly states on WBSM that he would not go into NBHS as a substitute teacher to view the conditions first hand. The excuse, he did not want to deprive students of their education if he were to do that. You mean to tell me that a person with a college degree, along with a law degree is not adept enough to substitute for even one day to experience what these teachers at NBHS are going through? Heck most substitutes don't have college degrees. Coward is an appropriate word as he doesn't want to face the fact that it is not whloely a teacher problem. In fact I would go so far in saying that he is part of the problem. Shame on you Mr. Mayor. You wouldn't let your own mother be subjected to such conditions as a former teacher in the NBPS so why let these good teachers be subjected to such horrific conditions and then blame them for the failures of past leadership and lack of social morals. Shame on you for your lack of empathy and most all your lack of leadership in a situation that demands a true leader.
