Dear Mr. Mayor,
Please come to New Bedford High School and speak to the teachers. You can do this at your discretion. Whenever and wherever you wish! Monday we have professional development! I will forego my PDP's for a sit down with you! You can have my undivided attention. I will listen intently, but then you 'll need to listen to me. I'm going to tell you about the history of NBHS. I'm going to have you visit my building, where windows don't open, doors don't close completely, where water leaks in, where books are old, where broken chairs pile up in a corner of many different classroom, where graffiti goes on without removal, where teachers make so many personal purchases it is unbelievable, where housemasters turn a blind indifferent eye to really problems only to debate who wins the monthly attendance award, where you wouldn't recognize passing period from classroom time in the hall, where teachers are bullied by their administrators and students alike.... But wait, you will also see teaches giving it everything they've got to help students improve their life situations, where students give their all to learning, where good kids do exactly as we ask, where we say good morning and treat each other with the respect we all deserve, students, teachers and the like, where people go out of their way to help each other every in the most dire of circumstances. I am proud to be a member of New Bedford High School and will continue even after I am shown the door. Mr. Mayor, please. We need you!

To the Mayor
The mayor wants open dialogue what better way to get open dialogue than going to the high school and meet with the teachers. Let him see first-hand what is needed, the lack of modern technology, lack of materials, supplies, books, physical problems with the building. Let him experience what it is like when the students are in class, going from one class to another, etc. Mr. Mayor, we won't let you be alone with our students.
If you, Mr. Mayor, can attend other events and functions during the day, you certainly can spend a day at the high school. I am sure City Hall will run quite nicely without him, after all he was out of town yesterday and the city continue to operate without you.
Open dialogue with the teachers who are in the classrooms daily not with people who sit on a committee and are new to the district.
Teachers across the entire district need to be heard and supported.
Yes, Mr. Mayor! Please come and speak directly to us at the high school. Listen to our concerns and the reality of what goes on here day in and day out. Come and see how demoralized the teachers are because of the holiday greetings that Dr. Durkin felt the need to give us a week before the joyous season. Yes, her plan, which brought a smile to your face when presented at the school committee meeting in December. Instead of writing in the paper or calling WBSM to whine about not being allowed to speak, come and speak directly with us....Hopefully, we will see you on Monday.
Why is Mr. Mayor so afraid to come to New Bedford High School? Certainly, he can't be worried about assaults; it's a perfectly safe building. He can't be afraid of the PCB's; they are at quite safe levels. And, as he stated not too long ago, the morale among teachers has never been higher, so it's not that he's afraid to be contaminated with negativity....and our wonderful students, I am certain, will greet him politely, and keep their use of the "F" bomb to only once every 10 words!
Mr Mayor,
You seem to have made a choice not to comment. I really do think your first hand visit would open up our world to you. Please come in and visit!
The NBHS staff
Our mayor is a coward.
