The media should stop bashing our teachers. They're doing a great job. I can't say the same for our city and state politicians.... By Willie Desnoyers

My vote of confidence goes to the New Bedford Educators Association and their president, Lou St. John.

I feel that today's teachers are asked to play too many roles. They are babysitters, crimefighters and the targets of anti-union rhetoric.

They are the victims of political campaigning and of being blamed for the failures of how our tax dollars are distributed.

I do not want my tax dollars going to charter schools. They are nothing more than private schools where students are picked and chosen.

If a child is selected to have the honor of being a charter school student and shows signs of failing after a month or two, that child is sent back to the regular public school. No wonder the charter schools can boast of their record. If a child fails, they get rid of them. The public schools can't do that. They have to work with those pupils so he or she can achieve whatever they are capable of. Everyone can't be a superstar.

We should all support the teachers, not just in New Bedford but all of Massachusetts. A movement is under way to destroy their rights to collective bargaining.

The media should stop bashing our teachers. They're doing a great job. I can't say the same for our city and state politicians.

The threat of laying off 50 percent of New Bedford High School teachers is not the answer. Neither are charter schools.

The union is right, we shouldn't be supporting anyone that doesn't support us.

Thank you for your support. Cleaning up the mismanagement in the school department would be a great first step in helping the children of New Bedford.

I just made a contribution to Special Olympics. No United Way for me - I refuse to give my money to the cocktail crowd.

The united way letter in today's standard fishwrap solidifies my reasons why I won't donate to the united way. I will not be bullied into giving Michelle Hantman and Craig Dutra my money. If the uw needs money they can get it from Jon Mitchell and the community foundation.

You can follow the money here as well...

In terms of cash flow, the corporation is the dominant form of business in the United States. Corporations make enormous campaign contributions to politicians at every level of government. This produces a situation where politicians who want to keep their jobs had better do what corporations want them to do. Further...media outlets are for profit businesses. They do not exist to provide accurate information to the public. They exist to make a profit. And most of them, particularly the really big ones are owned or at least strongly influenced by...you guessed it...corporations.

Any institution that threatens the common interests of corporations or their ego bloated senior executives will be attacked both politically and through the media. And unions, public or private are nothing if not threatening to the pathological need of those at the top to control everyone and everything.

I'm the elephant, and I approve this message.

Turn the other cheek... that was a lesson we did not learn I guess. Let's punish a charitable organization for standing up and saying yes we would like improved standards in our miserably failing schools. No of course it's not the teacher's fault but it's also not the United Way's fault give me a break this is childish.

Don't agree with the above post on being childish. Teachers are extremely generous by nature. We should not be told where to donate our dollars. Doesn't it make sense to give our hard earned dollars to an agency that might even support us?

Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Guess Ms Hantman was never taught that.
