New Bedford Superintendant Pia Durkin Calls ABC 6 News Report About Teachers Being Attacked “Irresponsible”

Yup, that is pretty much what you can expect when kids find out there will be no consequences for their actions. And as for the superintendent's response, once again her statistics seem to be rigged to support her theories rather than the facts. Having taught at NBHS and KJHS, I have seen some of this and it has always been a problem. However, our administrators didn't have their hands tied and we were able to hold back the tide a bit.

Yikes!

Did ABC 6 embarrass someone sensitive?

Did someone point at the emperor's new clothes?

Did the elephant in the living room finally get mentioned?

Perhaps someone will suggest to Empress Durkin that she should get some real clothes and stop blaming teachers for the trouble caused by parents.

Go ahead ABC 6.

I dare you.

She is so full of it along with her cronies and the sub standard times! Come on down and teach in the chaos and violence that the teachers at NBHS put up with everyday and then you'll have the right to speak! Shame on you Pia, shame on our useless mayor, shame on the parents that bring up these thugs and shame on you -the standard rag for printing lies!

The question is who is being irresponsible? Clearly not the teachers!

The video was from 2012. I'm surprised they couldn't find a more recent one. Pia wasn't even here at that time. Let's get some students to share the clips you know they have from this year. But, we really don't need clips to start admitting things must change. It's not a union presidents job to run the high school. It's silly to blame Mr. St. John for the conditions at NBHS.

I just heard Mayor Mitchell's response to the the ABC 6 piece. He referred to "realignment in staffing" -- that's what we are calling it now?

If you would like to see some more updated New Bedford High School fight videos, simply go to You Tube...the students are obviously proud of their video filming achievements--they willingly post them online for all to see.

Why wouldn't she have known about previous year's assaults, she knew all about previous year's test scores. You would think she might like to know what might be producing problems in learning other than teachers having to teach test material. It is one more example of the fact that she doesn't give a hoot about the teachers or the students just the bottom line. The bottom line has nothing to with education and everything to do with politics.

I think this is just horrible for everyone. Violence is up I think at all schools I really don't know how teachers do it. When I was growing up you respected your teachers and students or it was my ass my mom would of grounded me for my whole school career. You didn't fight someone unless they thru first and you would be suspended either way for like a week. How can you not discipline the trouble makers and expect the teachers to control the situation. Students will walk all over you! Parents I also think need to be more involved and discipline their children. Many are sent to school with no guidance. This is my opinion I just have seen so many children who are adults now with no guidance or support growing up family wise a mess.

Thankful that the school I work at is not like this. Feeling very thankful for my students. No teacher should have to work under these conditions. No consequences?? No wonder the kids are running the show. Smarten up and suspend or expel these kids. They obviously don't care about their education. Let them be home schooled.

Please Channel 6, please continue this investigation. Surely there are more recent clips from this school year. How about interviewing some NBHS students? Most of them are living in fear as well.

Pia should have acted immediately the first time a teacher was assaulted this year. She didn't. One assault is one too many! How many assaults will it take for you, Pia, to do something. The violence in our schools MUST end. This violence happened and continues to happen under her leadership. What kind of a leader is she? Is she waiting for someone to get seriously injured?

All the DATA she needs is readily available. This is a poor excuse, Pia. Do your job, stop the violence, immediately address these issues, and stop the cover-ups.

Everything that comes out of Pia's mouth is a lie. Are we to believe her when she says she didn't watch the 11:00 news to see the report on NBHS? Yeah, right! She is beyond pissed about this and you know she was glued to the T.V. waiting for this.

Durkin can keep putting a spin on her nonsense. The public is on to her and they are finally seeing her true colors.

I'm grateful for ABC 6 News for exposing the chaos at NBHS. I think we should take it further and get Dateline or 48 Hours to investigate further. Lets get this mess out in the open before something horrific happens at that school.

I find it ironic that the "Data Queen" went on the radio and didn't have her DATA available to answer Michael Rock. She's so used to having WBSM in her pocket she thought she could BS her way through the interview. Kudos to Michael for asking Durkin for the hard facts.

She is not a very nice woman she seems very mean from all the things I have heard about. I hope she looks in the mirror and gets out of the mean girls club.

The mayor is such a horses A## and I am a parent! I am so glad that I didn't vote for this corrupt person!

Mitchell's comments on Channel 6 news last night were pretty lame - and Durkin was made to look like the liar that she is on the radio. My suggestion to her is this - get back to Oz. I heard there is an opening there for a new $$$$$$ &&&& - she'd do a much better job at that than she is doing here. Of course - the pay is probably NOT $180,000 a year.

The kids in the elementary schools know there aren't consequences for their behavior. Wake up, we've been dealing with weak administrators for years who are afraid of the parents and are only in it for themselves.

Are we talking about Parker...

Between the Bullying of students and teachers who has the time to Educate these children. The few teachers that do care are prevented from doing so,Politics takes over Education. Who will be the voice for these children and teacher.Parents who care....My own experience with the downtown Administration has been nothing but a nightmare.
