New Bedford High School has the opportunity to re-create the school curriculum. The Arts need to be re-established in the school, such as ceramics, pottery, calligraphy, painting of murals within the school. Opportunities to visit the Museum of Fine Arts, attend performances by the Boston Ballet, or play productions in the Boston area. They need to have the opportunity to attend sports events made available through support programs available through various programs supported by outside programs. New Bedford High School deals with homelessness, poverty, English language learners, teen pregnancy, hunger, lack of parental support, drugs, alcohol and violence. I've worked at NBHS for the past 10 years and have never regretted a day of teaching! I have good days and bad days like everyone in this world but I'm blessed to have a job that I love which is not a job but a passion which I've had the opportunity to share with my students.
Christine, the arts and sports have been protected and core content neglected. Full parking lots for sp-arts, empty open response questions in language arts.
that knucklehead might change your motor oil and filter or possibly do a compression test on your motor. He or she might shingle your roof or install your flooring. That kid might be on the form crew for the foundation of your new home being built. He or she may work at titelist or precix and may use something they learned from the manufacturing technology thread in school.
Not all kids will read Shakespeare or be scientists or doctors or lawyers. We have a attendance problem in our district. These type of classes can help kids at least show up everyday and maybe just maybe open their eyes to acedemics.
My knucklehead relatives are doing better financially than my college-educated ones. That's the fact school reformers don't want you to know. America runs on knuckleheads!
Schools are to prepare students for their future career goals whatever they may be. Giving studens the foundations they need whether going to college, the workforce, or military. Every job is important. No industry, government agency, business, profit or non-profit would be able to survive without people performing different jobs to make the organization successful. The CEO of an organization is only as successful as ALL the other people below him/her.
Our high school has and still must provide those disciplines to give our students the skills they need.
We must stay UNITED AND STRONG. WE ARE ALL THIS TOGETHER!!!!
I teach career ed. and am always happy to hear a student tell me he/she is interested in carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, welding, etc. Having a "hands on" or trade is very important today. In fact, CONSTRUCTION WORKER is one of the top ten jobs listed under the title of "Jobs/Careers Help Wanted" in the country along with pharmacists, accountants, and hairdressers. Go for it!!!
Pia made a fool of herself on WBSM yesterday. So glad so many people are now aware of the craziness we're putting up with. The truth always comes out eventually.
Working as a teacher under Dr. Durkin is like having a hornets nest implode in your classroom while your trying to teach 30 students of different needs and behaviors and test with Galileo, analyze data, reteach skills from the interpretation of data, make your own Galileo tests, test again, analyze the data, reteach, etc., etc, etc, AND keep the students actively engaged while Johnny is yelling out, Sally is hitting Mary, Paul is walking out of the classroom because he "feels like it", Bobby is leaving to go for counseling, Andy didn't take his meds so he is crawling on the floor, Dina came to school with a stomach virus so she needs to go to the nurse, and on and on and on.... while making sure your mastery objectives are posted and they show RIGOR!!!! because the clipboard people are in to do a walk through. And..... you are getting stung by the hornets the entire time!!!! Oh yeah, my morale is definitely GREAT this year!!!! If you don't believe me, just ask the "Education Mayor"!

Let's not forget about tech end/industrial arts. Those are the kind of classes that keep the knuckleheads in school!

In regards to the "Knucklehead" course comments, there are many Lawyers right now making FAR LESS than General Contractors..........
