I believe most of the veteran teachers had "the fire in their belly" to help their students. In many of them that fire has been extinguished or at least diminished by the disrespect they have been shown by this administration, and undisciplined students who are allowed to misbehave with no consequences. Give these teachers credit and listen to them. They are "in the trenches" and know what really needs to be done but they have been completely ignored and left out of the "turn around". Shame on all of those who have allowed this to happen!

A retiree's point of view: My heart goes out to my former colleagues who are working under horrendous conditions .... Submitted to NBEA
I am a recent retiree from the NB Schools. My heart goes out to my former colleagues who are working under horrendous conditions. The stress of the job of a teacher was always something to be dealt with because most of us felt a deep responsibility to give each of our students the best education we could despite all the things that made it hard to do so. Many students come to school distracted by less than ideal situations at home--poverty, violence, illness, lack of support, hunger etc. The current administration had taken the stress of the job to a whole new level. How are teachers supposed to be able to concentrate on their students' needs when they are terrified of losing their jobs. Yes, they are afraid--their livelihood may be taken away which will place their families at risk. They are being bullied by constantly being told they are not doing something right. They are made to spend hours writing lesson plans which are then criticized for incorrect wording, punctuation. They have to spend hours putting together their portfolios for their evaluation or their re-application for their jobs!! All of this takes away from time spent on their students.
I believe most of the veteran teachers had "the fire in their belly" to help their students. In many of them that fire has been extinguished or at least diminished by the disrespect they have been shown by this administration, and undisciplined students who are allowed to misbehave with no consequences. As soon as the new recruits discover the way they really will be treated by the "powers" of NB, they'll find that the "fire in their bellies" is at best acid reflux, at worst, an ulcer.
Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge the importance of what we do and the indifference our own administration toward us. This has been a frustrating and exhausting year which has resulted in veteran educators questioning the validity of their practice. To my veteran colleagues - you are valued by your families, friends, retirees and fellow educators. Know that what you do everyday makes an impact ... one that Pia and her posse, despite their best efforts, can never take away. Stay strong ... April vacation will soon be upon us.
Agree with this post. I didn't have enough time to retire but walked away anyway, as in resigned. Too much stress, lack of respect, humiliation, etc. I plan on Teaching in another District in the fall...one where I can get some amount of respect for the profession that I feel I have the "fire in the belly" for. Best wishes all!
...and now something we can never improve, add rigor to, or support with data, our race!
Thank for understanding where NBPS is at. We will never be able to reach to where we can improve without the the backing of our administration. will we ever get that?
I can't imagine why anyone would want to teach in New Bedford. It's like working in Hell.It can't be like this every where. I'm actively looking else where. All I need to be happy is respect and appreciation.
Our school is in turmoil,no one trusts anyone and the ass kissers just keep on joining the backstabbers club.
I love Pia Durkin!
April Fools
Mayor Durkin is in la la land and really doesn't care what happens to the students or the teachers. Her huge salary and her cronies earn more than 20 times more than the people who really care about this school system-the teachers! We all know who is to blame for this mess!
A cure for NBPS?

The April Fool's joke was great!
The connection of Pia Durkin to Mitchell Chester has to be the Common Core. All her buzzwords and actions are scripted from the Common Core. We need to STOP Common Core!!!
Avg teacher sal in NBPS is 70k. 20 times that is 1.4 million per year.
The ability to get somewhere in life is to work your butt off towards a goal. I don't care if you are black, yellow, pink or blue, a strong work ethic gets you places. I worked hard for my job as a teacher, I went to college and worked at a job! I would be ashamed to take a hand out! No one is going to tell me that one race is better at teaching than another. It is how you are brought up, good parents, strong morals, working hard determine where you go in life.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CONFRONTS TEACHER
On March 24th, 2014, a New Bedford High School student verbally abused a high school teacher and threw a chair in her direction. Why did her get upset? Because she confiscated his phone. It is reported, but unconfirmed that he received 63 minutes of in-school suspension.

Totally disgusting...Pia needs to take action and Teachers you must file charges!!!
You should not have to put up with animals such as this.
This is horrible! This superintendent needs to go. There isn't a reason in the world this is acceptable behavior. Teachers really need to unite before someone gets seriously hurt!!!!
Who's the clown that doesn't understand hyperbole? That is a Common Core skill.
Pia and the mayor will have what is coming to them, because what goes around comes around. What makes them think they can treat human beings like they do ??????

Fire in the belly? The only fire I have in my belly is the bleeding ulcer I have developed from working in this district. Dr. Jerkin can take her stupid buzz word sayings and shove it.
