Do we have any union actions in the works?

My kids have Open Court photocopies as readers. Thank God that someone is finally asking for a new reading program.

On July 1, 2013, a toxic virus infected New Bedford Public Schools. So far there have been 85 confirmed casualties.

I don't think those photo copies are the actual OC text. Those are stories to read at home for the younger grades. Wouldn't you rather have your child reading REAL books and having as much Art Music and Gym as the rest of the kids in Massachusetts? Sadly, this administration only seems to invest in common core materials and test prep type stuff.

You're lucky they had photocopies!

I love the "toxic" virus comment....so true.

How many attended? Would be great if it was a failure.

HAZMAT, where are you?

The pages from Open Court anthologies were used for toilet paper.

Heard no applicants for the high school

Too bad Mayor Durkin's job wasn't up for recruitment.

To new recruits .... Please know that NBPS neither values nor respects its employees. It matters not if you are an administrator, teacher, custodian, paraprofessional or food service worker... We're all in the same boat and sadly it is sinking rapidly to the detriment of the students and families we service. The indifference of school administration, school committee members, mayor, local media and politicians to our students borders on criminal behavior and should be something you carefully research before signing a contract. Please consider safer options and look out for yourself and your families as you commence your new vocation. Best wishes -a concerned parent and educator.

one week its actual OC, one week its copies. Obviously a sign of lack of resources. Asking for a new program is the right way to go. Whether its OC, Letter People or Reading Street is hardly a groundbreaking difference.

The Elephant warns newcomers to beware of the guy with the harpoon at the top of the sign. That's Captain Pia Ahab letting everyone know what to expect from their employer once they get fully invested in the community. She will alter the mission of the education system from teaching students to killing the careers of teachers.

"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering teacher; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart, I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee."

Captain Pia Ahab

Good luck newcomers. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Sideshow freaks are encouraged to apply, but we "DO" discriminate.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Durkin was kicked to the curb along with Mayor and SC? They don't belong in office. It's criminal, really.

This despised superintendent is trying to recruit candidates from TFA, Teaching colleges/ universities, and MATSOL. Hopefully, new teachers are being forewarned.

The great powers have forgotten that education is about human compassion and discovering your life's gifts. To help you discover and travel your journey. That one day you'll be able to give back to those you love.

The super is such a liar-if people didn't get axed-what were those pink slips handed out? Come on down new teachers-don't expect a warm welcome!

Word is there were no applicants for the HS. Who would want to work for a system hell bent on the destruction of the profession for self satisfaction. (Mayor, SC, and Not so-Superintendent) How about a Principal that tells it's teacher's to show up at the job fair or you will not have a job next year. Can you say unfair labor practice? Anyone know a good lawyer? NEA/MTA are asleep at the switch. (AGAIN)

A lifetime of work and sacrifice to serve the City of New Bedford and all I got was a slap in the face; more like a kick in the groin. I was born in New Bedford, went to school in New Bedford, and had my career, and profession destroyed in New Bedford.

Wow! What a LIAR! "There were no layoffs". Is she delusional, or what?

The NBPS Propaganda Department has announced that the district is actively recruiting minority teachers.
We could have had a minority superintendent, Dr. Kriner Cash. He didn't have a chance up against Pia, Mitchell Chester's choice.
Since Jon Mitchell is such an expert on diversity, how many members of his staff reflect the city's changing demographics? Better yet, maybe the top job should be filled by a minority.
Eddie Johnson would be the top contender.

So according to the ST article today, I can not relate to my students because I identify myself as white? Yes, I am white. This article is very misleading, it did not include how many "white" were also bi or even tri-lingual. So now my job is in jeopardy because I teach in a more urban school within the district and I do not look like the students? Isn't that discrimination to make those comments about me? What background is PIA? Is she not white? Why do we not have a Hispanic superintendent? Maybe there is the problem. Let's get rid of Pia and bring someone of a more diverse background to NB. I am sure they would be better than her.

I'm confused, again! Kids can only respect those like them. They can only learn from teachers like them. So the standard times says we need to hire teachers like them. Ergo, classes of minority teachers will only have minority students. Students do not need to follow any request made by people who in their perception aren't like them. So, Mr policeman pulls over a white man. The policeman is not white. Can I refuse to follow the rules? Can I disrespect him? If we need to hire minority teacher (it didn't say qualified minority teachers) the world will be a better place. Do we hire Asian teachers for Asian children? Portuguese teachers for Portuguese children? You get the picture. Again, the substandard times at it's best.

One more thing, these outsiders that are being hired with New Bedford money are being asked to live in our community, pay taxes in our community. No? Great! More money finding it's way out of New Bedford.

I agree with the post above about replacing Pia with Eddie Johnson.

Anonymous said...

If Durkin, the Mayor and School Committee want more minorities working in the district, why didn't Pia hire ALL minorities to replace the administration at the high school and top administrators at PRAB?

Anonymous said...

I dont id myself as white. I need to enter white on a state or fed form as no other category exists.

Also, for the record, as a resident of NB, I am offended by the teacher's description of the "hood."

What's the hood?

It seems to me a judgmental, stereotypical description of people and places.

Oprah Winfrey identifies a petite, aging, WHITE lady as her greatest teacher. Those of us that live in NB, LIVE IN DIVERSITY. Pia does not understand that. I am disgusted. White guilt(by those that did not grow up here) should not be projected on those of us that did.

Anonymous said...

I would love to have Eddie Johnson run for mayor! He's one of the most articulate, caring, gentlemen I've had the pleasure of meeting. He says he doesn't want to....but maybe if enough NB residents get behind him. I can't believe no one challenged Jon Mitchell in this last election.

They had balloons!!!!

Let us not forget that the principals are just as evil as pia, when they carry out her sinister plans.........

Anonymous said...

I just heard Ann Bradshaw say the goal was to get 601 educators at the recruitment fair. I don't think they met their goal.

Anonymous said...

I think the Standard-Times should be printing everything in the Spanish language that way they can, perhaps, increase their readership. I wonder how many Spanish employees they have to meet the increasing Spanish population here!!!

I am sure a few of the school committee members would think this is an innovative idea!!!!

Sadly, Oliveira is just another Pia lover on the SC. They just thank her and thank her and thank her...even when she can't answer a question, they thank her?

Anonymous said...

Drop a house on these delusional people.

Anonymous said...

The whole SC is just a bunch of bobble heads agreeing to everything Pia rambles about. Everything is wonderful and she's doing such an excellent job skewing the data for her mid-year cycle evaluation. Gee, how wonderful it is to see the scores improving so rapidly. Give me a Break...Wake up SC and Mr. Mayor, this is our city!!

Anonymous said...

Of course the scores are improving , everyone is teaching to the test right down to the primary grades . Let's teach our youngest how to read by drilling nonsense words so DIBELS scores improve , and now the data looks fantastic. Now that's progress !

Anonymous said...

I believe the scores are our future, teach the test, and let the progress show. Show the state the effectiveness of our teaching. Let the children's silence, remind us what Pearson wants education to be. Pia is the greatest, the greatest reformer of them all!

Any truth to this: Principals were told they could hire "on the spot" during the job fair?
