TO THOSE TEACHERS WHO WOULD VOLUNTEER FOR THE UPCOMING RECRUITMENT DAY ... Submitted by a member

To preface this post, I am a veteran teacher who has taught in NBPS my entire career. I am not being forced to retire nor is my job in jeopardy. It is my choice and I am ready to leave. I will leave however, saddened by what has taken place in our district over the past eight months. To witness the collegial spirit and morale deteriorate due to outside stressors is disheartening.

Principals have been asked by Dr. Durkin to have their schools represented at Keith Middle School on Saturday, March 29th for teacher recruitment. Principals are now soliciting teachers from their schools to accompany them. In my opinion, any teacher who volunteers for this event should be required to look into the eyes of their fellow colleagues who have either been terminated, have had to re-apply, are taking early retirement, are resigning, are prescribed anxiety medications, and/or are seeking help from counselors due to the unprovoked belittling and in some cases outright harassment from some administrators throughout this district. You should be made to visit their homes to get a firsthand look at the disruption and turmoil to their families that have been unduly caused by this administration. You should be made to justify to all involved why you are trying to recruit new teachers to fill their vacancies.

If after all that you could still rationalize the need for your participation, you have no conscience or compassion. Your moral compass is clearly misguided. These traits are primary and essential to the profession you espouse to be part of. You are privileged that your colleagues will most likely offer you the forgiveness and the compassion you so callously will not afford them. You are also fortunate that you are not in other professions that would show much less restraint towards the disregard you have for your coworkers.

Your agenda and that is what it must be referred to, is selfish and shameful. Any teacher that would attempt to recruit young naïve teacher prospects into such a demoralizing atmosphere that we are currently experiencing in NBPS is disingenuous at best and deceitful at worst.

-TO THOSE PROSPECTIVE TEACHER CANDIDATES:  What you have witnessed and are currently witnessing within NBPS should be taken extremely seriously by you in your consideration to become a teacher in this district. Presently this district does not respect its’ teachers nor do they consider their input for student achievement to be of value.

The superintendent, along with the mayor and school committee have put strategies in place that are toxic towards morale and malign what we as teachers strive to provide our students each day. My suggestion to you as a prospective teacher would be to RUN, NOT WALK, AS FAST AS YOU CAN AWAY FROM NBPS.

beautifully said.... I pray that no teacher from other schools( NBPS) will have the courage to show up to this fair. It is a shame that we are going through this; and if they have no shame and do show up, I hope they tell the perspective teachers the truth about what is going on. A district that treats its teachers worst than animals are treated. SHAME ON THEM

Dear Lord! I hope the above comment was not written by a teacher!

Why would this district have their recruitment fair at Keith Middle School and not at New Bedford High? Wouldn't you want to have prospective employees see where they will potentially work? Could it be that they are embarrassed by NBHS? Do they think that these young teachers will, like suggested in the blog post, run far away from here?

Two paws up to this post.

So should young prospective teachers avoid NBHS? How else will the school be turned around while continuing the plan that has been selected? What about those who remember NBHS as a great place that shaped them into proud New Bedford citizens? I enshrine my years at the high school. As a young grad student I hope someday soon I will be honored to begin my career there. Giving back to that school and our community is what I strive for. I will always be a Whaler. This page should be for encouragement and positive collaboration for the revitalization of NBPS.

Many of our finest Whalers were taught be seasoned teachers that are being pushed out too soon. I hope the young idealist in grad school will never experience the deep pain from a lifetime of dedication dismissed by a data sheet.

Good point. Keith is shiny and new (even if built on a contaminated site)....at NBHS the award cases have had dead bugs and dust in them when I go there.

Maybe the idealist grad student is an alias for someone else.

Great post. Teachers being used as pawns to recruit is beyond low. Still cannot believe how many people in this city that are drinking the koolaid. For the young Teachers, please look elsewhere. You will find that it is rare indeed to be abused like the Teachers in New Bedford are on a daily basis. Took my son to a counselor the other day....the counselor says: "You cannot believe how many new clients I have that are Teachers in New Bedford." Smarten up people..this ship is sinking. Until someone smells the coffee and gets rid of the Superintendent things will never change. Best wishes.

The young idealist grad student has not yet been slapped....and slapped.....and slapped. It is not his fault, I guess. We were all that young and fresh and optimistic about changing the world once.
After giving your life's blood for X years and then coming to this, young man, you have a different perspective. Maybe you can turn things around. Our "encouragement and positive collaboration for the revitalization of NBPS" has come to naught. Good luck to you.

How dare Durkin coerce the principals, and now the principals have to strong-arm someone to represent their schools!!! She is nothing but a threat on top of another threat. I hope the principals who know they are leaving in June laughed in her hideous face! When will this END??

What a callous woman to hurt teachers of this magnitude...swift and brutal.

Hey, new hires, want some nice mice droppings, left for days, where you eat? How about the PCBs these are exposed to every day? And for the bonus prize...a crazed dictator/ tyrant for a superintendent. May these vacancies remain empty in our quest for justice.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but why are principals and teachers being asked to man a job fair? Isn't it the job of the superintendent and our human resources superintendent to collect applications and hire new employees?!! They get paid six figures vs. our "just scraping by" wages. Why should we do their dirty work? If they want to fire, let go, force out, or otherwise harass educators into leaving, then they should have to do all the work of recruiting new hires. This is the height of idiocy.

To the young grad student- No, young teachers should not avoid NBHS. We look forward to the time you get to help educate the city's children and move them in a direction not much unlike yours. To ask people to volunteer to help assist this administration to replace people that you've worked with for up to two decades that have lost their jobs. and possibly their careers, at no fault of their own would be unconscionable. If the administration wants to recruit teachers, let them do it themselves. There are more than enough of them now.

New hires, don't expect any help from anyone! Just like us, you are on your own!

Can someone find the law that states
children have to take the Parcc test?

SHAME SHAME from a teacher of 30 years!!

Does the union have any plans to picket this event? Maybe we should "volunteer" and then tell what it is really like to work for NBPS when people approach our tables.

NBEA Members,

We are successful in our plight and have accomplished more that we even realize. First, we are smarter than what we are given credit for. This is evident in all our blogs. We are sleuths. The information we have uncovered and shared regarding the shady pasts of administrators hired in this district sheds light on dirty secrets. Second, we have also spread the word about the terrible working conditions and the abuse against good, solid teachers. In turn, many districts view ours with disdain. Think about the publicity of word-of-mouth and the power of social media. Third, in regard to Pia's job fair, they have a taste of what they will attract...new headmaster and principals. Decent educators will avoid this district like the plague. There is nothing the Mayor, SC, and Durkin can do to repair the damage control as it was self-inflicted. Finally, God doesn't sleep. If you deliberately and knowing hurt others, your past will catch up to you. It always does. Former HM, this applies to you, too. Let's keep up the good work and keep this blog hopping. The public deserves to know the truth! We will continue to reveal it...

There is no shame in supporting the truth.....

I plan to stick around a little longer so that I can continue exposing the error (s) in Pia's ways. We are losing solid teachers. We are seeing those with years of great teaching still to offer leave before their time. We should not stay silent as this takeover/faux turnaround is beginning.

I totally understand and empathize with what the teachers are presently going through.
I'm an involved parent. I would also be upset at the release of teachers with many years experience if it were me or my colleagues.
The ad in the paper for the job fair lists for all level and specialty teachers. I'm guessing that's why it's being held at Keith.
Now, all that being said, I'm really concerned about the types of comments I've seen here. Virtually....go away any young and/or new teachers...this is a terrible place to work!
I've worked in some terrible places where I was sick all the time because the owner/boss made me do things that weren't right...long story.
Anyway, comments on this post (I can't speak to all others because I've only read a few)....I'm ashamed, truly ashamed by many of you. Because you're upset at jobs, understandably so in most cases, bottom line, you're wishing the worst on today's students, all of them, especially the high school.
I may not agree with the administration's way of dealing with this but, I hope those of you thinking less about the success of the students were never or ever will be MY child's teacher

I certanly undrestand your feelings. There is a lot of angst here. Unfortunately, this is the only place some people feel thay can vent without reprisals. Yes, some of it is "over the top". For me, with a young person in my family just starting out on their teaching career, I would caution her not to apply here. This is simply because I want her to have a positive "initiation" into the teaching world. New Bedford has proven that there is no loyalty, no support, no materials, lack of discipline on the whole. They will eat you up and spit you out. She is young, an idealist. I do not want here soured on the profession. Sorry. I get your point, and that's mine.

Where is the MTA/NEA in this? We pay enough in union dues for them to sit on their asses and drink cocktails with politicians? Paul Toner- where are you? You, Tim Sullivan will go down in history as the union officials who sold out Teacher's unions in Massachusetts. The Teamsters wouldn't let this happen...
