Things like this happen often. I saw it myself all the time. The difference is, they aren't always caught on camera. This kid would be sitting in class like nothing ever happened if someone didn't film it. There's nothing special about this incident. Just another day at NBHS...

It only took A WEEK for Pia Zadora to investigate the incident? That demonstrates how much of a handle she has on the school system. This is very disturbing! Wonder what Mayor McCheese says to her: "Good job!"

did he throw the chair to help get that teacher out of her comfort zone? That might give her a fire in the belly...she was too calm and must need culturally appropriate response training.

I am a teacher as New Bedford High School and have been for quite some time! When asked in my interview, years ago, "why we should hire you", my response was quite simple. I am a teacher because I love children. I belonged at New Bedford High School because I am a product of NBPS and am a lifelong resident of the city of New Bedford. My prayer was to help the children of the city and be a positive role model for these children that may or may not have any positive role models in their everyday lives. Today, if I were asked the same question, I would run in the opposite direction. I am a human being. I have dignity! I deserve respect!

Pia Durkin, this message is for you. Please stop patronizing myself and the other intelligent adults listening to your political garbage. "Oh, I didn't know!" Yeah, sure you didn't know. You know when we sneeze wrong and are fast to come down on us like the "bad children" that you seem to think we are. Oh, you didn't know? Funny... a housemaster came and got the child from the room. This housemaster is watched like a hawk by your "spies" permanently located in the building. Keep claiming your ignorance to this problem. You're good at that! Attleboro didn't want you and New Bedford doesn't want you either. Shame on the school committee for allowing this to happen. Put the pressure on this woman to put the screws to the kids. If you put your hands on another person at any school in the district, you should be expelled immediately and police should be called and the child should be removed from the school permanently! No questions asked! I am disgusted that the superintendent and school committee have not stood up for teachers. We are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, children, sisters, brothers, cousins, friends. We have families to go home to. If anything happens to me, I guarantee you will be dealing with my long line of family members and will have to answer to them.

When I first saw the video I was appalled at the behavior of the high school student. You can hear the others egging him on and laughing the whole time he is trying to intimidate the teacher. It made me sick to my stomach that this child thought that it was ok for him to treat an adult in the manner in which he did. Now today I am driving into school and am listening to fun 107 as I always do and what do you know our fearless leader is on the radio skirting the issue of what happened on the video. Today was a day that I am truly embarassed to say that I am a New Bedford teacher. Why? you ask. Our so called leader "claims" that she didnt know about the incident until a week later is a bunch of crap. She has so many administrators watching every move we make every day. The teacher called the office so of course they knew about it. Durkin is just mad that it was leaked out to the media and she cant just brush this under the rug. She actually has to answer to people about what actions will be taken. But if you listened to her interview this morning, anyone with a brain will know what she was hinting at when she kept saying that the incident needs to be investigated. She is going to find some way to blame it on the teacher. She kept referring to our "tool chest" in which we as teachers need to be trained on how to de-escalate situations. That's great but where is the training? Where is any training in this district for anything that we do? It is a disgrace that our school committee and our mayor are turning a blind eye to this mess she is creating. The icing on the cake for me today was then getting home and reading my email from the union and their update on the task force. I read it and I wanted to throw up. Her response to some of the complaints is that it is not happening. Really? How would she know? Is she able to be in all elementary schools and secondary schools at once? There was a part about training coming our way to de-escalate situations which I thought was comical at this point. She is an eloquent speaker and that's why people are not questioning her, but people wake the hell up!!! She is gutting the new bedford school system and has no plans to stitch it back up. Lou if you are reading this, we need another meeting and this time we need a vote of no confidence. WE CANNOT STAND BY AND LET THIS CONTINUE. Wake up parents and be an active participant in your child's education. Do not believe Durkin's words. She is going to drive schools into the ground and blame all the teachers for what she has done. It's funny how when schools do poorly on state tests teachers get blames but when schools do well the teachers don't get thanked the mayor, school committee and durkin will get thanked. Our school committee is filled with worthless people and Finnerty himself should be ashamed of himself for allowing this to happen to the very system that allows him to be able to live every day!!!!!!!!

Those who work at NBHS are very vulnerable to the behaviors of students and how they continually bully teachers, staff, maintenance personal, cafeteria staff, para-professionals and administration with-out consequences.

I am so sick of Durkin lying to EVERYONE about everything that is going on in the school department. This aggressive behavior goes on everyday at the elementary, middle and high school level. She "didn't know" about it because it wasn't reported to her? How would teachers report these incidences to her? She doesn't answer the phone at PRAB and her secretaries are instructed to "not take messages". Get real lady and stop lying to the taxpayers of this city. They are the ones paying for your ridiculous salary. You know everything that is going on throughout the school system. You choose to deny, deny, deny the chaos and disrespect that is happening throughout this city.

Pia Durkin is a master manipulator. The only reason this student is having charges filed against him is because this was made public and she has to do something to save her a##. teachers are being assaulted everyday in this toxic school system.

Dr. Durkin's response is to always blame the teacher! This teacher was calm, soft spoken, and respectful in her attempt to speak to this student. Put her in this situation and watch her run. Better yet, stick her at the high school and make her EARN her $187,000 a year! See how fast she gets out of Dodge then.

This same crap is happening at the elementary level as well with no consequences. Principals are ignoring this and placing all the discipline on teachers. Since Pia came on board this entire school system has taken a huge turn for the worse. We are the laughing stock of nearby cities and towns. I don't see how things are going to ever get better with her in total charge and a useless mayor and incompetent SC.

Hey, Durkin is too busy to investigate! She's too busy creating new positions to fill. This is the most "top heavy" administration we've ever had and it's more screwed up than ever.

This kid would be sitting in class like nothing ever happened if someone didn't film it. That's so true.

It is time for Pia to stop limiting the administrators' ability to punish! Demanding that there are no suspensions is absolutely ridiculous! The result is what we are experiencing in the schools. The student body has a free reign. I have never seen so much disrespect like I am seeing now. It's time to straighten things out before someone gets seriously hurt. Wake up School Committee! Pia has to go!!

It sure will be interesting to see how the ST spins this one. Can't wait. Can you imagine if the chair had hit the teacher. Could have easily been a fatality. Aren't those cement chairs? Will the data show him absent or suspended? Maybe he wasn't there after all. Yeah, that's it. The whole thing was fabricated. Our schools are perfectly safe.

When teachers put their hands on students they are terminated.

Mother states he is a track star and "a good kid". Poor thing came home crying that day.
I would not call anyone capable of doing this a "good kid", and if I was the administrator he would no longer be a "track star" either.
Save your crocodile tears for court, buddy. Unfortunately you were just one of the MANY that happened to get caught. Pretty hard to cry your way out of video evidence.

What did the housemaster do regarding this issue? Guess that person dropped the ball.

No doubt Pia will show some serious RIGOR in analyzing the DATA for this incident. Surely she has the Fire in the Belly!!!!!!

This "man" not a kid, is a scum bag!

Anonymous said...

They knew about it we all know that...they just didn't think it was that serious...and it would get out to the public...

This goes on everyday at schools across the district..

This school system is out of control. Pia needs to admit this and go back home.
