Pia Durkin is destroying our schools. I'm voting no confidence on May 2.

Bob Unger's editorial today is an admission that his rag is Durkin's pr machine.

Anonymous said...

Delusional Bob has confirmed what we all knew - that that he is at the epicenter of the destruction of our schools and Pia and Jon Mitchell are just following his orders.

Boob Unger: Pia here are your orders for today. Find your self a very expensive pr firm and do it soon.

Pia: but boob, you are my pr firm.

Boob Unger: never mine that, your problem is that you have a problem following orders. Now follow my orders or I'll write an editorial against you.

Pia: yes, boob. I will comply.

amazing how quiet our illustrious mayor has been lately.famous quotes:
-morale has never been higher at NBPS
- Pia Durkin was the strongest candidate in a nation wide search
- we don't need comments from the peanut gallery

mayor - you and the school committee are now the peanut gallery.
-our schools are clearly not safe
-crime is off the charts in the city - what is your turnaround plan for the New Bedford Police Department?
-as requested numerous times in a public forum - you were asked to substitute for a day or even come in and talk to teachers - you have done neither

but you are the education mayor and you will be tough on crime. now in a few months educators who are vested in their community will be out of a job and all the above has a potential for getting worse when you have college grads trying to tame the beast that you created.

It is blatantly obvious that Unger is a loose cannon and very angry about comments submitted to this blog. The facts speak for themselves and we could not make this stuff up if we tried. Teachers and parents see right through the lies and coverups. Are you willing to challenge the district of Attleboro, Unger, regarding durkin's past? At least the media coverage there had the integrity to print the truth. You set a poor example for budding journalists, and just as guilty for harming NBPS.

I was actually hopeful that when I read the editorial headline that Durkin would finally be exposed as the "failure" that she is. The hope faded as soon as I saw, that as always, Unger attacked the NBEA accusing it of being "manipulative" when they stated that 50% of NBHS teachers would be replaced. Have we seen the FINAL number of teachers that are going to be replaced?? Weren't those Durkin's words when she announced the turnaround plan? He just couldn't resist making remarks about the union's boycott of United Way and the demonstration outside of city hall.Durkin should return to the hell she came from and I hope Urbon and Unger are right there beside her helping her shovel coal and fanning the fire that will eventually consume all of them.

NBPS Parent said...

Oh the hypocrisy...the ST article today speaks of "manipulation of misinformation" and in the next paragraph states that the "eventual number in teacher turnover is far, far lower" than the 50% announced. First of all the fact the the word "turnover" was used instead of firing or layoff makes that statement an outright lie. The number of teachers fired or subject to layoff may be lower, but only because many others voluntarily resigned or retired early out of fear or simply just being fed up. THIS IS TURNOVER...and that ST article is the epitome of manipulation and misinformation. Also, how arrogant!! What qualifies the ST as an authority on education?

I am a NBPS parent and I desperatly hope that the tone of the debate will change on both sides of the isle. However I do not feel our Superintendnet is fostering any sustainable and long lasting growth. Her slash and burn managment style is not building any bridges between parents, community steakholders, teachers, or administrators. It is also my hope that Mayor Mitchell starts to talk about the underlying social issues that impact our city and the effect on our children. Some of the children in this city have seen more hardship, and heartbreak before they even set foot inside a school than many adutls see in a lifetime. These underlying issues at least need to be brought to the table for all to purpose solutions to them.
I voted for Mayor Mitchell and I am still a strong supporter because he is extremly intelligent and his heart is in the right place. However this Pia Durkin tenure is reminiscent of the Portia Bonor debacale and it is polorizing people which is not productive for our city, or our children. Bring back MIke Shea!

Let's hope the Union takes the Vote of No Confidence and doesn't put it off again. I think we all learned our lesson.

Pia got a spanking from the S-T on the editorial page this morning. Pia you are not following our orders. Shame on you. Let this be a warning.

Anonymous said...

Why would the editor of the Standard Times strike out against the teacher who had a chair thrown at her? Why would he offer guidance to a superintendent who is clearly disingenuous? Why would he intentionally distort the facts and downplay acts of school violence? And, why does Unger feel he knows more than the teachers when these are our experiences? Bob Unger is like the plague...

Another tantrum, Bob? Grow up!

The ST writes about how they were impressed by the superintendent's confidence and track record. I can understand how they were taken by her confidence but I'm having trouble understanding the track record piece. I never felt the track record piece was convincing given all that I heard or read.

Before the superintendent lent an ear to the ST it would have been prudent to listen to the boots on the ground. Mrs. Durkin would have bought herself plenty political capital if she had done that.

As for the truth eventually coming out? Not a chance. There is so much mistrust in the district Morencys doesn't stock enough carpet to cover all that requires covering.

Anonymous said...

The mayor does not have a good heart. As a matter-of-fact, his heart is black. You will never see him step up and admit he made bad choices. He is weak-minded.

Anonymous said...

Is Unger insinuating that teachers, parents, students, and taxpayers are weaving fairy tales about Pia Durkin? Would he have the audacity to challenge Channel 12 News, ABC 6 WCVB,and WBSM? I didn't think so.

Anonymous said...

Either Bob Unger is durkin's Secret Santa, or she is bullying him, too.

Anonymous said...

Boob Unger is transparent and stupid. I'm not sorry that his paper is in the toilet.

Anonymous said...

Bob is grasping at straws to increase subscriptions.

As Larry the Cable guy would say, "You know you're a Redneck when you use the S-T for toilet paper."

Enjoy the giggles, folks!

He's on Mitchell's and Durkin's payroll working overtime on damage control. Too late.

More evidence to use at our meeting. Let his words keep coming. Clip it or print it out.

The ST has become a sleazy tabloid.

Time to get rid of that woman and her minions aka principals and their spies.....

Anonymous said...

A good track record? She tried to cover up a rape! These are our children. The truth always prevails.

Anonymous said...

And the next principal of Normandin is...a teacher hating Durkin clone? NO!!!

Anonymous said...

There was a time, at the very beginning, when we believed in Dr. Durkin. We had such high hopes for this district. We would all work together for improvement. That was not the case. It was all an illusion. We were hoodwinked, again!

Anonymous said...

Is there anyone counting the remaining days more than the principal at Normandin?

Anonymous said...

Wave your hands in the air--like you just don't care--Pia Durkin BEWARE!

NO CONFIDENCE Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow or Ever!

Anonymous said...

The principal at Normandin never stood a chance. Lots of luck to the new designee. A one year contract will be about enough. Maybe it's too much. A disaster waiting to happen.

Anonymous said...

Bob Unger is an embarrassment to the journalistic community.........................................:(

Anonymous said...

This has turned into a circus, she should have been shown the door along time ago ,when she started the culture of fear and having the principals go after teachers.............

Anonymous said...

Send the mayor packing on his way too ....hope Brian Gomes runs against him and beats the crap out of him......we need a mayor who doesn't think he's better than the citizens he's suppose to represent..............

How did the editorial in today's Standard Times support the students of New Bedford? A call for better public relations does not question policies, but only addresses how these policies are spun. Going on Fun 107 in the morning to defend one's position, as our superindentent has done, was a pathetic and desperate attempt to not accept responsibility and to do this in a very public way. Instead of discussing public relations strategies, there may be another way for Dr. Durkin and Unger to support our students. How many plays and musical performances have Dr. Durkin and Unger attended this year? How many games? If she gave up spinning stories and took up actual attendance at events, that might be a start... Maybe Dr. Durkin could catch the upcoming NBHS production of Beauty and the Beast, a couple of lacrosse games, a few softball games, some baseball games, track and tennis meets...And as she walks along the sidelines, she could spin the explanation of why one of our new administrator's is on administrative leave from Central High in Providence...Clearly better public relations than calling Fun 107...I think...

New Rule
If you are a newly appointed New Bedford High School administrator, please don't say "Go Whalers" yet. It's just not authentic. One needs to experience at least one bonfire, one Friday wearing red, one meal at the Whaler's Rest, one complete reading of Moby Dick, one senior joyous at their college acceptance, one freshman asking you where D Block is... "Go Whalers" in January of 2015 might be approaching authenticity, but please not now...

Anonymous said...

Everyone needs to come out in full force! EVERYONE! I can understand why the teachers at the high school might not want to attend, but we need to hear their stories. Please consider coming. Everyone else: no excuses! This can affect your future at NBPS!

Anonymous said...

This school system and our hometown newspaper are both a joke. People from other cities and towns simply cannot believe the garbage we are putting up with. This has gone on WAY TOO LONG!!!!!!! Please forgive the folks in Attleboro for saying "I told you so."

Anonymous said...

AMEN.

After hearing the prepared statement regarding the outcome of the chair throwing incident it is clear that Durkin is baiting the mayor and SC to fire her. It was low brow and unconciliatory. Sometimes you need to be careful for what you wish, it may just bite you in the ________.

Anonymous said...

But, will the SC and Mayor take the bait? I have no faith in them. Durkin has Chester as ammunition. It's ironic, but I can imagine pia poking fun at mayor for his lack of masculinity and submissiveness to a power-hungry squirt of a superintendent.

Anonymous said...

Chester could soon be dethroned. He has been instrumental in weakening our public schools to the point of no return. His ties to Common Core have started to ruin his credibility.

Anonymous said...

Chester is being challenged by a school committee member in MA for being on the Parcc board. It seems a conflict of interest and a reason he wants the test in MA. Look into it.

Anonymous said...

Such betrayal. It is all about the money. Shame on you Chester! The governor of Massachusetts should fire your ass. God only knows what you and durkin are up to, but eventually it will come to light.

Anonymous said...

What we know about Durkin:

1.She is untruthful! She was caught lying on mutliple occassions when she was in Attleboro.
2. She hides the facts! She tried to hide a rape when she was in Attleboro.
3. She misrepresents the facts! She always presented just the positive spin to the school committee in Attleboro and never the hard, difficult truth.
4. She doesn't care about the kids! In Attleboro she denied kids snacks and lunches.
5. She was fired from her last 3 jobs. In one district it was the teachers who voted No Confidence and sent her packing. In another it was the principals. In Attleboro it took 7 years and a group of parents who ran to be elected to school committee to finally get rid of her because she did not repeat her prior mistakes.
6. She's doing the same things she did in Attleboro all over again. Firing teachers, replacing administrators with puppets, strong arming the media and lying to the public and the school committee.
7. Moral was low in Attleboro and it's the worst I've ever seen here!

We must vote NO CONFIDENCE now, or our futures and those of the kids we teach are doomed. I'm ready to strike if they don't get rid of her once we vote NO CONFIDENCE!

Anonymous said...

Pia Durkin is repeating those destructive behavior patterns here in NBPS. A leopard never changes its spots.

Anonymous said...

We have to assert our collective power now!

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say superintendent made mistakes. Her actions were premeditated and deliberate and they still are.

Anonymous said...

If we don't get rid of Pia Durkin now she is going to continue to DESTROY!

Anonymous said...

Could someone please explain what a vote of "no confidence" would accomplish?

Anonymous said...

A vote of NO CONFIDENCE would signify a staff with no desire to continue following orders that are harmful to students. A vote of NO CONFIDENCE would show the entire school committee that their continued support for her demands will no longer be tolerated by the teachers of this district. A vote of NO CONFIDENCE would show the students of this district that teachers are their greatest allies. A vote of NO CONFIDENCE would be a call for Dr. D to pull back or pull out. Finally, a vote of NO CONFIDENCE means just that-we have NO CONFIDENCE in her leadership and we have little hope for better days any time soon. What can she do next year that she couldn't do this year? How long do we wait?
