It was my understanding that no personnel working for the New Bedford School District would be allowed to continue working in the next school year if they could not produce proper certification by a certain date. How is it then, that some people are being hired without proper certification and on waivers? This is highly inappropriate. The school committee should look into this.
Yes and I also think it is interesting that some people who are not certified still have jobs and others do not. When is this district going to learn? We are under fire by the Dept. of Education. Keep certified people!
P.S. In addition to certification, a teacher also has to be highly qualified. That's a state and federal mandate that came out of the No Child Left Behind. So, how about a school system that has a teacher with a Professional level license from the DOE, is a highly qualified teacher already, holds proof of being highly qualified in two subjects, has professional status and more than 30 years teaching experience and is taken out of their highly qualified area of teaching and told to teach outside of their HQ area. Does the school committee really know what some New Bedford administrators are doing to some staff? I doubt that they know the TRUE FACTS! I know for a fact that that this is a violation that the Department of Education would attest to. Who is going to stand up and say were not going to take this any more! I know I am.
It is my hope that the school committee will do what they were voted in to do and that is take action. Enough with the investigation into this that and the other. Everyone knows this district has committed multiple violations with hiring people on waivers, keeping those people because they are connected and getting rid of people they don't like. Get rid of the offenders and start at Keith Middle School!
Regarding an article written in the Standard Times on July 3, 2009- stating that Mayor Lang is going to ask the unions for a wage freeze. I think what Mayor Lang and the school committee failed to mention was that school ADMINISTRATORS just received their raises this year, and weren't magnanimous enough to set an example for the people they "lead"; the "good of the children"; and the greater good of the community. Mayor Lang likes to put a certain spin on things that perpetuates a negative light on our city's teachers. I don't think teachers should accept his proposal. He hasn't sacrificed anything. Dr. Bonner hasn't, and it isn't fair to ask this of a few.
No Pay Freeze Ever! How about we stop paying conultants $800+ a day to hand out more Venn Diagrams. A pay freeze, or wage cut will simply undo years of hard fought negotiations and set a precedent to allow city officials to disregard our contract.

If the school committee had hired Dr. Scott the New Bedford School system would not be having the problems it's facing.
But I don't blame the school committee. Bonner fooled them like she fooled us all. She knew all the buzz words and she spoke so sweetly. What a farce!
Pollouck was behind the movement to get Bonner. Let her eat crow for hiring that misfit.
How about the standing ovation. Didn't Pollock organize that with that socialist group she leads?
