Dear Members,
The state announced on October 14 that Massachusetts students ranked or tied for first on the National Assessment of Educational Progress mathematics exam in grades four and eight, the two grades tested. Previously, Bay State students outscored the country on the NAEP reading test in those grades.
Although some media picked up on this news when it was released, many did not give it prominent play. Bad news may sell more newspapers, but good news sells the benefits of public education.
The success can be attributed to many factors, but none is as important as the hard work of teachers and administrators and, of course, students. Parents who encourage their children to demonstrate respect, responsibility and effort in school also deserve much credit and appreciation.
Thank you for your hard work.
Lou

The ONLY test that says our students are underperforming is the MCAS Test.....while other states have less vigorous testing we continue to use the MCAS to demoralize our staff and destroy our students desire to learn with this test driven environment.
To add to anonymous - yes, and along with this inane testing teachers are now being told that they will be terminated if they cannot up the scores from the students in their homerooms. This is entirely unacceptable. Perfectly qualified good teachers could lose their jobs simply because they don't make AYP. What about the accountability of the administrators in a building, who are in charge of this whole process?
