I must say I agree with her on this one. Just because we have always done something should it not be looked at again? I think it is time to rethink what we have always done. She is thinking out of the box!

I don't agree with her at all. She is not thinking out of the box. How can reading be bad?

Bonner is a control freak. aka micromanger.

Eddie Johnson is a good man.

School Commmittee, how long must we all suffer?

So Byron should get school funds because Eddie Johnson says so?

Who said anything about School funds?

Nobody said anything about school funds. That's the problem. But she doesn't work for free.

As someone who has worked with both the official RIF program and Ms. Byron I can certainly support Dr. Bonner in this decision. RIF has always been professional about the book drops and their support of the students' reading. Many times a student wanted a book that was chosen by the child before and the RIF representative returned later in the day with that title for the child. The 3 times we had Byron in our school we played host to political figures, listened to very long speeches about the importance of reading and all the great things they have done to support reading, and watched her demonstrate how she walked when she modeled. We never saw books from these visits....we, as teachers, had to supply a book that the visitors would read. Before you make any decision about the effectiveness of Byron's "show" please take part in one first. They truly are a waste of time and have nothing to do with the sustainability of reading but more with the promotion of Byron herself.
