Dr. Portia S. Bonner seems to be somewhat of a contradiction

The post was submitted by a visitor to our blog. What are your thoughts?

Our superintendent, Dr. Portia S. Bonner, seems to be somewhat of a contradiction. She values the meaning of her contract but doesn't respect unions. She favors the protection afforded her in her contract but supports legislation that would destroy protection afforded others in their contracts. She gets evaluated after 18 months on the job but supports legislation calling for union members to be evaluated every year. She gets 18 months advanced notice that she probably won't be rehired but fires union members on the spot and forces the union to fight to get their jobs back. Her recent comments seem to indicate she expects to be a hot commodity even with a bad evaluation and a non renewal. The irony is she is probably right.

Here are some more which seem to apply:

Do as I say, not as I do.
I'll lead. You follow.
My contract is valid; yours isn't.
My contract in hand is worth 2 units (A and B) in the bush.

It doesn't apply to me.

This woman has been a contradiction from day one. Go back and review her interview for the job. She sounded great with ideas for school improvement and increasing student achievement. The implication was there would be a collaborative atmosphere with stakeholder involvement. She then procedes to start a war with the union and to isolate stakeholders and supporters. Somewhat of a contradiction indeed.

She may be a contradiction, but a well paid one who seems to be holding all the cards right now. How many of us would like to be offered $200,000 to go away? And she still has the ability to make people's lives miserable before going away.

Its a shame that the newspaper, school committee and superintendent don't realize they are messing with people's lives in the games they play and the personal, petulant attitude they all take to our schools. Look at the crazy letters in the paper today! Meanwhile teachers suffer on in forced silence. Anyone want to start a bumper sticker campaign: Ask a Teacher!!!! What a crazy idea.
