Principal at Parker School Asks Parents to Evaluate Teachers

February 10, 2010

Dear Colleague,

On January 21, 2010, the Association became aware that the principal of Parker School implemented a new evaluation form. As a result on January 22, 2010, The NBEA filed a Level II Grievance on behalf of the teachers at Parker School for the following three reasons:

1. The principal initiated the use of an Evaluation Form that is not part of the Unit A
Bargaining Agreement.

2. The principal sent this Evaluation Form to the parents of Parker Elementary School.

3. The parents of Parker Elementary School will evaluate the staff at the school.

The following are some of the items listed on the form:

1. School staff is disrespectful to students.

___never
___once in while
___fairly often
___very often
___don't know

2. There are racial or cultural biases shown by the school's staff.

___never
___once in while
___fairly often
___very often
___don't know

3. There is conflict at the Parker School that is based on race, religion, culture, gender, or disabilities.

___never
___once in while
___fairly often
___very often
___don't know

4. How satisfied are you with the quality of your child's teacher(s) this year?

___ very satisfied
___ satisfied
___ unsatisfied
___ very unsatisfied

5. How satisfied are you with how well you're the Parker School staff communicates with you?

___ very satisfied
___ satisfied
___ unsatisfied
___ very unsatisfied

6. Please rate the following: 1= excellent 2= good 3=fair 4=poor

___ Student-teacher relationships
___ Parent-teacher relationships

The Association demands that the principal of Parker stops using this Evaluation Form, that these forms are immediately destroyed, and that the data on the forms not be utilized in any way.

In closing, you should know that Administration has denied the grievance. We have been told that Superintendent Portia Selene Bonner does not consider the aforementioned form an evaluation tool but rather "a feedback form". This grievance will now be filed at Level III.

Sincerely,

Lou St. John

YIKES! Will the NBEA start giving out forms to evaluate principals?
I wonder how this principal would like data collected on her from staff, students, parents, etc......

quid pro quo... I say develop it an implement it... share the findings with the school committee.

I can't believe the negativity in this "feedback" form. As a parent, if I received this evaluation I would have the impression something not-so-good was happening at Parker School. As a teacher, I'd want to get as far away from this principal as possible. What could she have possibly been thinking? God help the educators in New Bedford!

I will say a prayer for all the teachers of New Bedford who are being harassed by their principals. These poor people suffer in silence.

I will also pray for those that pretend it's not happening and look the other way.

the principal is supposed to be the leader of this school. If a survey like this is sent out to students, what does it say about her? Either she is leading by example or has no control over wha's happening in her building. Either way, Central administartion needs to investigate... Send out the principal "feedback" form and present findings to school committee on this one!

Good idea. We should evaluate the principals.

NM. Don't lose faith. You have a good person representing you. That bully thinks she has the upper hand but the hammer is coming down on her soon enough. Stay strong, don't give up.

I think what is more important is how long this was going on before the NBEA found out about it. In some schools the principal gets away with murder because of the relationship he/she has with the staff. I have even seen some staff members ostracize union members who inform of contract violations. In some cases it is good that "it only takes one." Check out the past history of this particular principal. She was initially fired from teaching in NB, left NB, and through who she knew (a close friend of the former SOS), returned as a principal. You will find that the Normandin principal has a similar background-hired because of a close relationship with the former SOS. Doesn't the principal or RMS have a close relationship with the current SOS? Doesn't the Headmaster at NBHS have a close relationship with the former SOS? Isn't one of the principals married to the sheriff? Isn't another married to the Deputy SOS? Why shouldn't they feel like they can do whatever they want to do?

Hey. It's almost time to start thinking about negotiations for a new contract. Why not try to get it negotiated that teachers can evaluate principals? That ought to go over big. Some of you sound like you are on another planet.

The Insider seems pretty interesting. I wouldn't mind reading more from him/her. Hey Insider, what's going on at the high school? Since the Headmaster's position has been reposted, should we infer that the current #2 won't be the #1 next year since he was already one of the applicants the Supt. found unacceptable? The current Headmaster retires in October. How will this work? Is the new Headmaster scheduled to begin in October or will there be 2 Headmasters until October? Will the current #2 remain #2 or will he have to apply for the position since he is "assigned" to the position? Should the new Headmaster have the right to choose his/her own #2 or will he/she inherit a #2? Inquiring minds want to know.

The current #2 is acting in the position. He will need to interview for it or return to Housemaster.

Let's send the Roosevelt administrator to the high school. That way, she can screw up another school.

Interesting thought, evulate the principals. Will downtown be calling to strong arm you to "fix" a poor eval? Will a poor eval end in a rehire because someone on the school committiee is related? Will a poor eval mean nothing or perhaps a better job? That is reality!

THE PARKER PRINCIPAL HAS NO ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS,PEOPLE SKILLS, OR DISCIPLINE IN HER BUILDING. THIS IS PROBABLY WHY SHE IS ASKING THE PARENTS FOR HELP. THE SUPERINTENDENT AND SCHOOL COMMITTEE SHOULD EVALUATE HER AND SEE WHAT REALLY GOES ON IN HER BUILDING WITHOUT HER KNOWING YOU ARE ARRIVING. IT SHOULDN'T TAKE A GENIUS TO FIGURE OUT WHY SO MANY TEACHERS AND STAFF HAVE LEFT THIS BUILDING. SHE IS A PHONY. I CAN'T BELIEVE OUR ADMINISTRATION REHIRED THIS INCOMPETENT PERSON TO BECOME A PRINCIPAL IN THIS SCHOOL SYSTEM. WE(THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS)DESERVE BETTER LEADERSHIP!
