School Committee Update

* The New Bedford School Committee has hired back 52 of the 80 teachers who received layoff notices earlier this summer.

* 18 teachers were not rehired because they did not receive certification waivers from the state and were ineligible for rehire.

* 10 teachers remain without jobs.

The integration of special needs students and others into the classrooms, only increases the number of students. I now have 32 students in my class. What happened to trying to keep the classrooms to a reasonable level?

14 sped students in a regular ed class isn't that a sped class with a regular ed teacher? Oh, I forgot I'll teach to the top.

but we still have 4 SRO's at the high school who hide out in their air conditioned office

"Hide out in their air conditioned office!" You obviously don't know what they do or how they do it. They are not in the high school to teach or to manage our classrooms. It is our job to do that. It is our job to make sure the kids are following the rules set forth by the school committee and the in-school committees. The SRO's are police officers. They are dealing by in large with juveniles. We have more authority than they do when it comes to search and seizure. These guys work hard in dealing with what goes on. There are no better anywhere in NB.
