Marlene Pollock, who is NOT a primary or secondary school educator, who has NOT the courage to come work in the environment that I do, says, "Don't throw kids out for three to five day suspensions for skipping class, wearing a hat to school, or mouthing off."
Yet she offers no alternatives other than "every child has to be treated like our own." Here's a big clue madam, MY children are taught to respect other people and property. MY children are taught to work hard to achieve goals. MY children are taught that they are responsible for their actions and can expect to be held accountable when their actions do not meet the standard.
If you want me to treat the student like they are my own children, you need to give me the tools to do so. Take the gloves of madame, make some pertinent changes instead of blaming the teachers as is your wont. Get the phones and MP3 players out of the school. Hold the students accountable for their actions instead of fostering an environment where there are no repercussions for egregious behavior, and yes, a student that consistently wears a hat and no ID in the school building, cuts class and says, "F&*% you, what are you gonna do about it?" is egregious behavior. If you don't like those rules, CHANGE THEM!! Don't require us to enforce ridiculous and unenforceable rules like no-hoody or no-hat then berate us when there are suspensions for not following the rules THAT YOU REQUIRE. Hold the students and THE PARENTS accountable for getting the students to school on time. Get THE PARENTS involved in the EDUCATION instead of using us as the publicly funded baby sitting service that you, my employer, currently operate.
Better yet, take your name tag off, come be a substitute teacher for a week without telling anyone who you are, then come back and tell me your plan, because it surely will not be the lack of accountability, responsibility, goals, respect and standards that you presently espouse.
Your bio says you are a professor at BCC. Do you pass a student when they fail to come to class? Do you pass a student who does not do the work? Do you allow students to make phone calls or listen to music in your classroom while you lecture? Do you allow students to vilify you in the most profane manner without consequences and then welcome them back into your classroom the next day? I think not.
Yet these are the battles we fight every day, and you will not allow us to use the same management tools you yourself use in your own (college) classroom. Your double standard smacks of political self aggrandizement madam. We have serious work to do here. If you are not willing to be an effective part of the solution, please get out of the way.
The "machine" again. If you run the CSJ, CAP, hip hop and other community groups and are an elected representative with multiple family jobs in two institutions ( BCC , NBPS) you probably shouldn't be making evidence free claims about political machines.

I recall "Teacher for a Day" He showed up to tell me he didn't a plan he would "wing it". At 9:00 he went to the men's room and never came back!
