School Committee Report - August 15, 2011
A group of concerned educators from the Gomes School addressed the committee during the public comment period. They detailed a list of health/air quality issues with the building. City and state health officials conducted an inspection on August 2. Dr. Francis stated that a “punch list” was developed and the items on that list are being addressed. The school committee voted to monitor the situation at Gomes and will discuss the progress of work at the school during their next meeting.
Ms. Jane Daly was appointed to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Accountability and School Improvement. Ms. Daly, a city resident, was a teacher at New Bedford High School. She has also served as an Assistant Principal at the Dartmouth Middle School and as a middle school principal and Director of Curriculum/Instruction in Seekonk.
Dr. Francis informed the committee that 2 elementary principals have resigned. Mr. Bart Lush of the Hathaway School has accepted a position in Seekonk. A new principal is also being sought for the Kempton School. Ms. Deborah Cimo is now working for the Somerset Public Schools.
The committee was also notified that 8 elementary teaching positions would be eliminated for the upcoming school year. This action is being taken for economic reasons.
The superintendent said work continues on the district’s turnaround plan. It should be submitted to the state by the end of this month.
The next Regular Meeting of the New Bedford School Committee will be held on Monday, September 12, 2011 at the Keith Middle School.

another downtown crony and more teachers out. whats it going to be 40 kids a class this year? i need a new job.
Remember, there is life outside of New Bedford!
Remember what the administration tells us" we are sooooo concerned about the students"! If they were, they would not cut teachers and add un-needed positions! Step into the teacher's shoes and come teach 30+ kids in a class.
Administration doesn't have the kids in mind. I've witnessed first hand their total lack of concern for the children we teach and their total concern about the money. It's truly so sad. I don't know how these people sleep at night.
Good Luck Somerset Schools.
Perhaps our focus is on the wrong person.aka adm. Do you really think the Super. has much power in this system? Try going further down William street. As for Somerset let it go. Do you want to be right or do you want to be happy?
What happened to the Mayor "balancing" the budget a few months ago with the teachers step increases? Now we have to lay off teachers? Who REALLY needs a math class? There is a class at the High School that teaches you how to balance a check book- perhaps tha Mayor and School Committee and Central Admin need a refresher course... Or maybe this is there way of telling us they do not communicate...
Imagine if there was no one working downtown how great it would be! I hope you don't teach logic in your class.
Maybe the administration needs to read the book-Shame of a Nation by Jonathan Kozal.
If the teacher gets left behind, what do you think will eventually happen to the children?
How about,"NO TEACHER LEFT BEHIND".
8 teachers gone and also no 1 on 1 paras?? kids in wheelchairs that need to be toileted, kids with severe handicaps? I agree that some kids had services that they didn't need, but COME ON!!
