In his article, Mr. Spillane says, "Adopting uniforms for a big public school system like New Bedford's would not be easy."
Mr. Spillane is right but in this case the size of a district does not matter. According to Massachusetts General Law Chapter 71, Section 83, "School officials shall not abridge the rights of students as to personal dress and appearance except if such officials determine that such personal dress and appearance violate reasonable standards of health, safety and cleanliness."

Councilor Gomes apparently means well, but he needs to do his homework.
I am in favor of uniforms, but it appears the legislature will have to amend the existing statute. The school department would then have to craft and enforce a uniform policy.
All of this is unlikely to happen.
Who will it fall upon to enforce a policy that can't be legally enforced in a public school?
I agree with the watchdog...it will never happen.
They've tried it in some elementary schools in NB but after a while the it fizzles. When will the politicians learn that it all starts in the homes?
Fairhaven went through this in 2010.

isn't this going to upset a certain school committee member?
This sounds like something that Sister Marianna and her innovation guru's would love!
One would think that with all of the wonderful consultants that have been hired under this superintendent, with their large salaries, we would have a plan in place that would be the envy of the State. But then again, when have we ever listened to someone else? After all, the powers that be know better! Maybe the end middle school principal could provide guidance with a new plan, after all, look at her impressive resume!
Consultant on large salary? What are you talking about, fiction writer?
Fall River Public Schools are doing it and having some success. Why re-invent the wheel? Call Meg Mayo-Brown in our "sister city" and find out the facts...
Personally, I would love a dress code policy- so sick of seeing the undergarments and private parts of our students who think school is a night club. I just wish we would also get the support from Central Admin to enforce it... one phone call to downtown could null and void this policy before it happens- some whiney parent saying it is a violation of their kids' rights- as they collect their checks on our taxpaying dime!
