I heard Eddie Johnson on the radio today criticizing the mayor for pandering to the s-t and mitchell chester. Great job Eddie, I couldn't agree with you more.
Chester plays the tune and Jon Mitchell dances! This is all politically motivated. What could be wrong with a turnaround plan that was INFUSED with input from the DESE? This is Chester's big chance to screw New Bedford and Mitchell doesn't have the stones to stand up to him and the S-T. Scott Lang wouldn't have let this happen. He fought for our system and its teachers. Jon Mitchell is an embarrassment.
As a voting citizen of New Bedford I am taking notes and keeping track of what our politicians say to get into office and do once in office. The newspaper states that insiders are the problem, so our politicians go outside. The outsiders were the problem so we go "inside". Problems still. Charter schools and smaller schools will fix it all! Yeah right! Wasn't our charter school supposed to be a think tank that would share successful ideas with NBPS? Has there ever been any type of sharing or was/is it all about the money. Our new mayor is listening to those people that are making the most noise. We need to make our own noise. Louder and stronger than anyone else. Our kids are the most important people in this mess. We need to teach them that educated people have power. We will not go down without a fight.
The scariest prospect to me is the fact that the school committee will be the ones to decide who will be replaced at PRAB. Haven't they played a hand in who's there in the first place?
This editorial is defined by the last lines. Basically, Unger admits that we should ditch Francis because that may impress Mitchell Chester. As for its effect on students, teachers, and stabilty - who cares?
Did Unger read the same report? DESE states that the school committee is also one of the biggest problems in NB. Why haven't they attacked the school committee yet? Or is this message driven by certain School Committee members?
Unger's pulling the same crap the kids pull when they want the attention taken off of what they did- the old bait and switch... He's worried some educator will red ink his paper and point out all the errors in the Sub-Standard Times
The S-T is seems to be in the pocket of the "roundtable" and "faith-based" group and they seem to be leading Mitchell by the nose. He's only been in a short time and already he wants change at the top like them. Where's the person from the state thats helping PRAB? Don't you think they should take blame?
Francis is not the issue, unless she is enabling the administrators beneath her. As long as Bonneau is in charge of Normandin, for example, it will forever be a circus. Education for the majority will take a back seat to the coddling of the few. Principals should be required to spend time in the classroom every couple of years. Bonneau, without administrative power and teaching a class, might quickly learn that her tolerance of disruptive children and her harassment of teachers who crave a healthy educational environment are a recipe for disaster.
Last night was great political theater. In the end, Attorney Tom Clark "schooled" our new mayor. Mitchell had an obvious agenda to fire Dr. Francis. The mayor treated Dr. Francis as if she were a criminal and he was questioning her under oath. When he couldn't get the nerve up to make the motion, Mitchell seemed flustered and adjourned the meeting. Also, kudos to Scott Lang for a great letter to Paul Reville. A real mayor, like Lang, stands up for his city. Mitchell has much to learn.
As I recall reading the report from the DESE, The School Committee was blamed in this mess as well. Marlene will try to point the finger elsewhere to take the limelight off of her. And don't forget, there are 3 people from DESE who have been in NB since May "helping" the district with a turnaround plan. Sounds to me like a set up for payback!

I'm sorry I ever voted for Mitchell. Had he said he was going to punish our system, I would have voted for Tony...he loves New Bedford.

It's the Pollach/Livramento show- eliminate the barriers to thier not so hidden agenda in order to bully their way to autonomous schools
