Workplace Bullying Policy

After 5 years in development, the NBEA is pleased to announce the adoption of a new Workplace Bullying Policy. The School Committee approved this policy on March 12, 2012. In Massachusetts, there are only handful school districts in the state that have addressed this chronic plague that is bullying in the workplace.

This policy is a definitive step in a positive direction for the teachers of New Bedford and a model for other school district unions. All employees of NBPS benefit from the protection of this document. We would like to extend our thanks to Dr. Francis for her support for the last year and a half in this endeavor and to the school committee for their wisdom in approving this policy.

I can think of a few principals that really need to read this.

Superintendent needs to take a good long look in the mirror as she reads this policy

As much as I appreciate the new policy, I hope this is not what the district will hide behind when it announces the results of the Bonneau investigation. You know, now we have a policy and we'll judge her against it in the future. Now is the time for Bonneau to go. She is tired, ineffective, and Normandin is a disaster.

To the commenter who mentioned Normandin. You said "when it (the district) announces the results of the Bonneau investigation." I hope it's when, not if. Count me worried.

As for Normandin being a disaster, there are things that are positive. While folks may have issues with the principal lets remember that it is easy to sign anoymous. Staff at Normandin are able to attend Professional Development, go out of building to observe other schoools, are invited to share their ideas regarding mangement. I don't deny that there are problems and that teachers are concerned about speaking up.Perhaps the district should step to the plate and offer to buy out her last year, instead of determining that nothing works.

Yes, there are good things at Normandin. There are some wonderful teachers and a good number of kids who love to learn. But Bonneau is a drag on progress. She can't handle the discipline, she makes teachers feel expendable, and she doesn't support the kids who are struggling to learn because of all the chaos in the building. I won't even get into the nepotism problem, but its serious and everyone at Normandin knows it. I don't know how much Dr. Francis is aware of this but she should be.

Ask the subs about Normandin. They don't have an agenda. They have nothing to lose. And they will tell you the building is a circus.

I agree about the subs at Normandin. After I came back after a sick day, I heard the sub vowed she would never work there again. The disrespect was too much. Are we, as everyday teachers, just getting used to it? Wow. Isn't there a better way?
