The United Interfaith Political Action group and the New Bedford Education Rountable continue to push their anti-teacher/anti-union small autonomous schools agenda. NBEA has asked them to cease and desist but our repeated requests have fallen on dear ears.

Hi all,
After a few short months and the hard work of many people, we are excited to announce an opportunity to learn more about proposals for small autonomous (Innovation) schools in New Bedford public schools. Please join us, and invite others, to hear plans for (at last count!) an Arts-integrated Community Wrap-around Services School, a Spanish-English K-8 Immersion School, and an Innovative Elementary School.

Good afternoon,
Thanks again to all who attended our discussion on Friday! I've attached the New Bedford Innovaiton Schools RFP again, and recommend that anyone interested in learning more go to the Executive Office of Education's webpage here to see examples of Innovation School proposals that have been accepted, as well as other information.
For those of you who weren't able to come, we talked about what makes an Innovation School different than a conventional school. There was energy in the room for having a deeper conversation about a possible arts-focused school, and the idea of a STEM (or STEAM--STEM + Arts) school was introduced. We also brought up the idea of a bilingual or "green"-focused school.
If you are interested in discussing arts-school possibilities, please contact Lee Blake or Kathy Miraglia, and for any other ideas or questions, please be in touch with us.
Looking forward to the continuing conversations,
Liz Aeschlimann and S. Marianna Sylvester

Hello all,
I just wanted to send out a reminder about the Innovation School meeting/brainstorming session tomorrow morning at 9AM at NorthStar, and also to send you a copy of the just-released request for Innovation School proposals, in case you are interested in perusing it before or after our meeting tomorrow. Please pass it on to anyone you think may be interested!
Looking forward,
Liz

On February 13, the New Bedford School Committee passed Innovation School guidelines that pave the way for launching two small autonomous schools in the city in 2013. This agreement gives community organizations, educators, and community members the opportunity to work together to design exciting new schools that reflect our visions for New Bedford’s students.
As committed contributors to education and well-being in New Bedford, we invite you to begin a conversation about our visions for excellent schools, and what it will take to create them.
Please join us at 9 AM Friday, March 16 at the Community Room at NorthStar - 53 Linden St for a brief introduction to Innovation Schools by United Interfaith Action and a conversation about your visions and ideas.
RSVP to Liz Aeshlimann or myself by Tuesday, March 13.

Recently the Fall River Herald reported that a Westport School Committee Member was arrested in Swansea for OUI. Upon reading the article I learned that this school committee member is Education Roundtable Member Craig Dutra's wife. Why am I posting this here? Because the self-righteous, Craig Dutra was in the passenger seat.
What was he thinking letting his wife drive under the influence? How many "children" did he and his wife's actions put at risk? How many parents might have been killed by them? Thank God that off duty police was there to arrest her.
They both should resign.

The paper goes on to say, "Swansea Patrolman Joseph Faria transported Dutra to the Swansea Police Station to make arrangements for a ride. The report indicated Dutra was also under the influence of alcohol. Africano was handcuffed, booked at the Swansea Police Station and placed in a cell."

An article also appeared in the standard times about the arrest but they sanitized the information? Is the standard times protecting Craig Dutra because of his affiliation to the education roundtable?

The UIA and the education round-table now control the New Bedford School committee. Jack Livramento is the high priest and Jon Mitchell, Marlene Pollock, John Fletcher are the disciples.
School committeeman livermento is the former president of the uia. Question: Why doesn't the sub-standard times report on all the conflicts of interest? Answer: they are substandard.
Had a New Bedford teacher been arrested for what Craig Dutra and his wife did, unger would have put the story on page 1.
Any updates on this story?
They both should resign their elected offices... what a travesty! They could have killed someone! Shouldn't we file a 51A against them to protect their children?
Seems to me Craig and Carolina should pay attention to the school system in their hoemtown of Westport. Look what damage these elected officials have done there. And we (I mean the UIA and Roundtable) are listening to them to "help" NB? No thanks!
Mr. Dutra:
Maybe the UIA can buy you some Poland Springs and a GPS. That way, you can find your way home after kissing up to Mitchell. I'd probably need a drink too after spending time with some of the people that attended.
Now that I'm done with the sarcasm, Mr. Dutra and his wife (Is she calling herself Sylvia or Carolina these days?) should be focused on the needs of their own school system. The Westport Middle School was laden with PCB's. Is it safe for the children? How about the recent budgetary issues. Will you have enough teachers to provide quality instruction?
When Craig (Westport selectman)and his wife (Westport School Committee) fix their school system, they can give us advice on New Bedford.
I'm disgusted with how the S-T handled the drunken driving scandal involving Craig Dutra and his wife. Both are elected officials. Both were apparently drinking heavily after a political fundraiser. They are poor examples for the community and their children. I agree with an earlier post that both need to resign.
The Community Foundation should also terminate Mr. Dutra. His behavior and poor choices show he really doesn't care about the "community."
