Even as Santa’s elves place the finishing touches on this year’s sleigh-stuffers, there is a concerted effort on the part of numerous individuals to present thought out, but misleading, statements designed to sway the public to favor both Innovation schools, and Charter Schools, in New Bedford. Our newspaper obviously supports these proposals, though they will state emphatically that they are presenting both sides of the argument.
It is an ad campaign worthy of Black Friday. But like that day of suspicious sales, it disguises product realities with impossible promises of success for those who do not understand the implications of purchasing inferior products. The big, blue box store that has all but decimated the independent retailer, hawks $200 laptops and $300 flatscreens which, on the surface, appear to be EXACTLY what the consumer wants are soon found to be without important components or common inclusions. The ill-informed consumer soon understands the difference between 512 MB and 2 Gig when they try to open more than a single program on that new laptop. Disappointments abound for new TV owners when that Tom Brady forward pass becomes a brown blur thanks to an incredibly slow refresh rate on a 720p…
Caveat emptor.
“Why didn’t they tell me this was a piece of CRAP..?”
They did. Every time you brushed past the known manufacturer, selling what you want at a fair price, to get to that POS at a bargain price.
What if the failure rates of those cheap-*ss laptops and flatscreens HAD to be printed on the label? What if every store that chose to lure consumers to its megastore paradise HAD to tell you the product won’t satisfy your long-range needs? What if you KNEW ahead of time your own government had struck a deal to refurbish these low quality appliances once they broke down?
What if you knew that 80% of those flatscreens were actually students enrolled in our local Commonwealth Charter school? What if you knew that the bargain laptops, being returned at astonishing rates to the government refurbishing centers were those same students?
Every day I read posts on Facebook from people like you who are asking each other where to find the best dentists, auto detailers, cookie recipes and financial planners, et. al. There is never a shortage of opinions, all presented with caring thoughts and best wishes. Let’s face it, in this city you, the teaching force, are the best educated group. You represent countless millions of personal dollars spent on pedagogy, content and best practices. You have no equal in number or community investment.
But in the new world of big box education you are in danger. Residents of Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Rochester and beyond are painting you as worthless and out-of-date. They are hailing the new order that is Acme Innovation and Dunder-Charter. They no longer care that you’re not willing to sell out.
You can be bought out…
You can be annexed…
Unless you can find it within you to stand up for YOUR product, your product could slowly become obsolete. And that would be the worst type of Black Friday ever…

Whaling City Watch is growing weary of United Interfaith Action and its propaganda campaign to bring Innovation Schools to New Bedford.
First off, we find it despicable that a political group uses organized religion to advance its agenda. However, this is really nothing new. While al-Qaeda uses the veil of Islam and terrorist attacks in an attempt to destroy our freedoms and liberties, United Interfaith Action hides behind their “religion” and attempts to undermine public education in New Bedford with their Innovation Schools. Yes, our language is strong and politically incorrect. We can just hear the telephone calls as the losers in the UIA call one another and express dismay with this post. If you want P.C. writing, go read the blab sheet. Bob Unger and the second-rate reporters at his dying daily dish out a steady diet of that crap. If you want pure truth, you come to Whaling City Watch.
Now, let’s critique the column in yesterday’s blab sheet. That piece of excrement was written by Marsha Onufrak and Tammy Rivet, who are identified as leaders of United Interfaith Action. The dynamic duo contends that there are inequities within the New Bedford Public Schools. We agree with that statement. However, they claim that Innovation Schools will correct the disparities that exist among schools. Whaling City Watch believes their logic is flawed and that Innovation Schools would worsen the inequities.
Onufrak and Rivet also make a veiled threat that if the School Committee fails to approve the Renaissance and Esperanza proposals, “these design teams can take their proposals and submit them to the state to be opened as charter schools.” A logical person would have to contend that is the UIA’s “Plan B.” The UIA is showing their real intent. They care more about their agenda than our school district and its students.
We urge the School Committee to reject the UIA and the opportunistic, self-serving design teams. %%% “Traitor” %%%%% and $$$$$ “Carpetbagger” $$$$$$$ will give-up when they get their cushy jobs elsewhere. There won’t be any charter school prospectuses from those two clowns. Does anyone remember Mr. #### “Leadership Academy” #######? He left New Bedford with his tail between his legs. %%%%% and $$$$$$$ will hopefully be next.
The Standard Times says that Global Learning Charter Public School is "still thriving". Is this a joke? Was the reporter smoking medicinal marijuana when she wrote the article?
I demand that she undergo a blood test to see if she's on something.
i think she's a victim of toxic fumes or perhaps to much exposure to bobby ungger cologne
Last time I checked the Global Learning Charter school was deemed a level 3!! So tell me, what are they doing that is so great???? Nothing. Nothing at all!!! What a bunch of BS!!!!
Why is the Global Learning Charter School getting so much publicity from the S-T Ragtime News? What's the REAL story?
They are level 3, and the high school students that would have a hard time with MCAS have already transferred back to NBHS! What level would the Global Learning School be if all of these students stayed on??
I still want to know if that school hold any type of accreditation?
Accreditation?! Heck, the superintendent doesn't even hold the PhD he claims to have! Global Learning is nothing more than a pre-packaged "looks good on paper" venture that is doomed to fail...why, it's almost there!
Maybe Steve Furtado, Charis Anderson and Carolina Africanos- Dutra have been spending time together drinking the same magic "firewater". Blurs the reality so much the believe it
follow the money my friends, follow the money...
