A Democratic Process

Right now there are political powers in the city pushing an innovation schools agenda, getting the vast majority of media attention, highlighting just the positives of the innovation schools and creating a “sky is falling” image of the existing school district. In reality, the negatives of innovation schools far outweigh the positives and the public district is performing better than many believe.

Whaling City Watch has written much about the troubled afternoon program on WBSM, “More Than Just Talk.” Veteran callers have deserted the show because the host, Phil Paleologos, fails to tolerate dissenting points of view. Mr. Paleologos is sarcastic and rude to callers who do not agree with his agenda,

During a recent broadcast, Paleologos blamed an obvious computer malfunction on “unionized employees.” Paleologos has also become increasingly arrogant. While he claims to give equal time to both sides of the Innovation Schools issue, Phil has lots of softball questions for those who favor them. Those that are opposed are treated to a Mike Wallace type of grilling.

We believe the time has come to take action. WBSM should have an afternoon program that embodies Democratic principles. All callers and guests should be treated fairly. Our area also deserves a talk show in which the host is truly prepared.

Writing to the station will not do any good. Phoney Phil and station management will wear those letters like a badge of honor. Phil will be proud that he has generated controversy. The only message they will understand is one that impacts the station’s finances.

Whaling City Watch asks that you call the businesses that buy advertising time on WBSM during 3-6 P.M. Please tell them that the afternoon program is not a good place to spotlight their product or service. Here are the local sponsors that we need to concentrate our efforts on:

Airport Grille
Attorney Karen S. Hamilton
C&M Floor Covering
Executive Mitsubishi
Fernando’s Grille and Bar
First Citizens Credit Union
Hawthorn Medical
Mermaids Restaurant
PharmaHealth Pharmacy
Southcoast Hospitals Group
Southern Mass Credit Union
St. Anne’s Credit Union
Sunrise Bakery & Coffee Shop
The Butcher Shop
USA Wealth Group

Whaling City Watch also urges you NOT to patronize the Shawmut Diner. Please tell your friends and relatives to eat elsewhere. We will be happy to lift the boycott of the Shawmut when Mr. Paleologos is fired or resigns.
