Superintendent Search Thus Far by Josh Amaral

The voice of reason in this process is Dr. Finnerty, who seemed adamant that the ideal candidate have prior experience as a superintendent in a successful urban district. No principals or assistant central office staff and no superintendents from rural Connecticut. His focus was on candidates having "experience moving and transforming a district" and not what he called an "alphabet soup" of titles before and after their names. He also expressed a hope that the school committee would not insist the best candidate become a resident of New Bedford, arguing that someone who needed to commute could be just as active or more active in the district than someone that lives here. This antiquated belief has actually gotten in the way in the past.

There are great Principals and or assistant Superintendents who are ready to take the reigns and move New Bedford forward. The sad part of hearing this news is if you look around the country at URBAN districts many school committees continue to go for the person who has "seat" experience but has no vision, no energy, no PEOPLE SKILLS! As a community lets bring in an energetic, community based person who will work tirelessly to move our district forward and who will be here for years to come because they want to be here!! By the way no one thought Tom Brady was going to be a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback, because he wasn't the starter at Michigan and he didn't win the Heisman. Its not how hard you hit its how you can take a hit and keep moving forward. Don't let this opportunity pass us by BOE, please we need our school community to be led by a leader not by a name!

Bonner & Francis kept things community based and obviously did not move the district forward. We are an educational organization not a community based organization. Let's put systems for great teaching in the driver's seat and the community in the trunk for a little while.
