New Bedford Teachers Union President Dreading Layoffs

Lou St. John says he would like to see the school committee consider the tabling of the Innovation School for the Arts until the addition of the school makes fiscal sense.

Since when do things in the NBPS have to make sense? No, they take what makes sense, turn it 180 degrees, and that's what they do!

That would make sense, so you know Mitchell wouldn't consider that! How many more months until we can vote him out? Let's vote for the intelligence factor next time.

Perhaps the school committee should take a look at the administration schematic. Someone please explain why the superintendent needs TWO secretaries that both make more than one teacher. Fire one of the secretaries and keep two teachers. But wait... that makes sense so it won't happen. Somehow this is the fault of the teacher but yet the teacher doesn't have anything to do with handling the money for the district.

Can we also seriously consider getting rid of Pollock prior to the term ending? Is there a way to impeach a school committee member? No confidence-gross incompetence- whatever term we can use. I am serious, she has caused a lot of damage in a short amount of time.

I'd like to know why other schools know which positions are being cut and NBHS teachers still have no clue....is the information hiding with Mitt Romney's tax returns?

The union should have made more of an effort to alert members about what was going on. Maybe we could have helped shape the discussion. Instead, we get the shaft once again.

Obviously the person who posted before me takes no responsibility for knowing what's going on and would like to point fingers at the union that protects their sorry &@&.

They must not have gone to the annual meeting on the 22th of May. I was there and the union leadership addressed the cuts. They must not read the newspaper since the union president has given numerous interviews on the cuts and they must not listen to the radio because i've heard him on the radio several times.

I'm willing to bet they didn't go to the budget meetings or any other school committee meetings.

There are always lazy @"" people who sit on the sidelines and do nothing except complain. Those are the people who should get laid off.

21 people spoke at the budget meeting on Thursday and most of them were parents. Where were the 100 teachers who are worried about losing their jobs?

No one likes the thought of cuts perhaps this could become a non-issue, the city council that won't release funds to the school, they are the same people who gave themselves a 44% raise just this year. Maybe they could justify their NEED for such money. Better yet maybe they could clear their eyes and SEE that cutting teachers and paraprofessionals results in giving the very needy children we service even less support and chance for success .

Lou, why won't you post the unit A and unit B positions that were cut? Do you even know?

This is the biggest mess I've seen in 20 years. People are buzzing around at interviews, searching for new teaching positions in other communities, retiring earlier than anticipated, hoarding materials, and ending the year with a bunch of poorly designed tests that will be used to identify them as ineffective teachers. Are the teachers that are selected by the principal going to be favored over the others? This is NOT helping the learners achieve. Still NOT about the children Mr. Haskell.

Haskell isn't the one we should be listening to.

Every budget meeting started with a kiss up to the two acting budget gurus. All the principals, department heads, SC members, and the mayor showered them with all the credit for revealing the mess and starting the clean-up. Pia, start the clean-up on County Street ASAP.

Let me get this straight, the Mayor, School Committee members, and Interim Supt. are cutting 250 positions in the school department because of the budget crisis; however, on the other hand, the school department has posted position, minimum of 12, for the Renaissance School at Gomes. Mind boggling to say the least! One position I did not notice on the job postings was a position for a nurse--guess Gomes School nurse will be handling those children also.

The rest of the district will suffer and do more with much much less, but the Renaissance School will get whatever they want. Shame, shame, shame on our elected officials!
