the best budget decisions are made by listening to the 25 parents who show up at a meeting and checking out the signs the drama kids make

Although I am a supporter of the arts, the sad message sent through all of these cuts is that the priority in this district is not academics, but music, art, phys.ed. and athletics.

I may or may not be a "supporter of the arts" - that is neither here nor there. I am a supporter of children. And to sit a child at a desk in each and every class for academics only is wrong. Music, art, athletics, and other co-curricular classes are necessary for a well-rounded education, never mind the fact that elementary and middle school children are not developmentally wired to sit at desks and attend for great periods of time without this kind of change in activity. Already we have lost recess, have "silent lunches", and expect these kids to do academics for 5-6 hours a day? And we wonder why Johnny is unable to graduate.....

Once again, the School Committee didn't listen to what the general public had to say. This is not the first time. Look back to the public comment sessions in April regarding the innovation schools. Remember the first meeting the Mayor left the meeting at 7:30 and he along with Larry Finnerty blew off the second meeting. Sorry to say, they could CARE LESS as they already have their minds made up as to what they are going to do now.
