What is Marlene Pollock thinking?

Principal Andrew Kulak has recommended cutting 52 positions at the High School.

The following is Marlene Pollock's reaction to the cuts at the High School.  "I think this sets it right," she said. "You know that whole thing: crisis in Chinese is the same word as opportunity. "» I think it takes a crisis."

politically connected to SE Mass Labor council, Cabral, and now Rep Markey, secure in tenured position at BCC, leading figure in a least three local non profits. and the first to claim there is some political machine opposed to "reformers" like her

Maybe Marlene should come into the schools and teach. She obviously has no idea what is needed! Many of our students are struggling to meet the standards and pass MCAS...so the solution is to cut teachers? Sure, let's enlarge class sizes, take away unified arts classes, limit supplies, put more stress on the few teachers we are keeping, and then our students will succeed. Sounds like a great plan. Our students deserve more not less. Those in places of power have failed them, parents need to speak up!

Maybe there should be "budget cuts" on the school committee. Let's cut positions there, too!!!

Let's send her on an all expenses paid lifelong trip to China. Whatever the symbol is for the opposite of crisis is what she SHOULD be trying to make happen for our students.

And yet she approved the opening of an Innovation School. So that's not happening now either right? They can't even afford to change out of block scheduling at the high school and they will cut arts, but open the Renaissance school. Such brilliance it's blinding.

Pollock needs to voted out. She is a clueless misfit.

We are stuck with this woman until 2016? There must be something we can do!

I can't believe that Marlene is being so flippant about this very real crisis--part of which is being created by the fact that NBPS is literally having to share its monies with charter and innovation schools...

OMG! Really ?!?!? I am at a loss for words!

What an outrage!

Disgraceful, this woman is talking about 250 people who will lose their jobs!

Anonymous said...

---she was talking about the 250 job cuts that may include at least 100 teachers. The other quotes I used to show how insensitive she is---and she is a big part of the fiasco! She was too busy trying to open innovative schools--instead of strengthening and supporting the schools she was elected to serve.

unfortunately she is not up for reelection until 2016.....we need to shorten the term limits!

Cuts need to start at the top .......too many administrators with nothing jobs except to walk around and collect Hugh salaries..........poor kids ...I thought that the children' s education was the prime concern ......oops wrong again !!!!!!

Here's an idea..... Get rid of the district benchmark testing. What they save on paper and toner to print all those tests could hire a teacher back! ......And it would allow more teaching time!!!!!

NB is cutting 250 jobs and yet they voted "yes" for an innovation school?????

yup- How does this make sense? We all know that the school committee should be replaced by people who are actually for fair education. Something stinks in New Bedford!

Anonymous said...

I'm sick of political decisions, lets make some that make sense.... common sense!

So sad. There's nothing anyone can do until the people at the top start putting kids first and trusting teachers. We know what to do. They just don't let us do it.

Pollock licks her lips as she cuts teachers throats. She is no good.

As a parent I have spoken..and for what, they don't listen to us either ..maybe us parents need to be visible and stand on the steps of City Hall! This is unacceptable and she needs to go! I will do my part but I can't do it alone ...

Marlene was again asleep at the wheel. Let's build more innovation schools and bankrupt the school system.

I have to agree with the previous posts. Marlene is a disgrace.

Her idea that cutting positions is a good thing setting things "right" is ignorant, surely.

But...

This is the woman in charge of a city's education? In the age of Google, there is no excuse for such ignorance. Crisis is made up of two characters == one representing danger, the other opportunity. This was popularized by Jack Kennedy decades ago, and he got it right.

If you're going to rationalize idiocy by invoking a cliche, at least get the cliche right.

Yet her kid has a job as a long term sub at nbhs

Go to nbps web page, click on central admin. On that page is a link to the hierarchy at PRAB. I hope Dr. Durkin blows up that schematic of overpaid pencil pushers who have absolutely NO influence on what goes on in the classroom. Several of the clipboard carriers there are making over $105,000. Cut a few of them and we make up the budget deficit.

And still... DESE stated that the school committee was the biggest impediment to nbps success/survival. Now we are missing 4.8 million. Ask the auditing firm about the financial mess the school dept is in. And Mayor Mitchell has the audacity to state on television that this mess is because of the race to the top money is drying up. I know how to balance a check book and you don't pay bills with "anticipated" money. Just ask your mortgage company

Call Susan Hogan from channel 12 investigative reports

Ask yourself why enrollment is down at nbhs...1- fewer children enrolled/ remaining in district. 2- transient families. 3- the f%#@¤¥ing school committee continuing to CUT funding to schools therefore cutting the course offerings/ electives. How the hell can we compete with other districts that actually care about students, their future and the education of the next generation of leaders.

The entire political body of New Bedford is being completely ridiculous and unfair to the students of the New Bedford Public Schools. First, the city council gives themselves a gigantic raise without thinking of future investments for tangible improvements like updated textbooks for our children. Then, the innovation school gets approved with the deficit that we are facing and threatens to take even more funding from the top of the budget, not to mention the charter school doing the same and not having the test scores to back up their so called "success". Now, we have Marlene saying that we pretty much did this to ourselves and New Bedford deserves a crisis like this to present a future opportunity? Has she lost her mind? If we are all in it for the success of our children, we will find a way to cut the excess from the administration at PRAB and unite to maintain a strong teaching staff and utilize new technologies and strategies to better the practice of the staff to lead the children of New Bedford to be prosperous life-long learners ready for the challenges of the 21st century globalized economy. Remember, the choices you make today, shape your world tomorrow.

Could we have a recall vote of Marlene on the basis of gross incompetance? If not, how about for just being gross?

The new principals are making big $ to terrorize teachers. That is all they do. Children are test scores to these DATA DRONES....

Martins should run for Mayor. He really is the only one who can take him out. Portuguese, young and bright - no brainer.

"Crisis" and "opportunity" are the same word in Chinese? Not according to any native speaker I know! Crisis = wei ji and is considered negative and dangerous. Opportunity = ji hui and is considered something positive. IDK where Marlene gets her stuff but she should be a bit more careful in her translations.

Her comment is unprofessional and insensitive! She solidified her lack of support for educators and lost a tremendous amount of credibility!

Principals and administrators should only be payed the same amount as a top step teacher..this would save so much money and maybe keep them humble ....then the savings could be used to add teachers...
