It seems to me that Durkin is using the paper to put pressure on the union to accept her plans. Maybe that worked in Attleboro, but I don't think that's going to work here.
What is SouthCoastToday.com's agenda here? I will never spend a penny to support them, unless they get "on board" with the reality that WE are not the enemy. That appears to be their reporting style. I always looked up to my New Bedford Teachers. Now that I am one, I can honestly say you will not find a more dedicated group anywhere. New Bedford teachers should be reading accolades about their efforts! However, despite the constant negative press we keep the most important aspect of our profession as a priority, each and every day. Each and every child, receives our best. Why? The bottom line is, we could not do what we do everyday, unless we believed in and cared about every child that walks through our door. That is what is behind the curtain, what the "marketing first", professionals (and I use the term loosely), at Standard Times sell out and fail to report.
The paper says the application to change the school day was done in the spring. How much input did Durkin have? Who else at PRAB was involved in submitting the application? Durkin came on July 1 so this can't be all her doing without some accomplices.
If this keeps up and we are expected to work longer hours for even less pay (because that's what it will add up to), I may as well go work for minimum wage at Walmart. At least they don't expect you to work extra hours beyond your work day (in fact, they frown on it) and they don't hide the fact that they only want to pay you minimum wage! I don't understand why teachers are the enemy?!!!!
It's the old bait and switch...point the finger elsewhere and creat a big stit, therefore attention is taken away from the real problem.... Unger and his old NB supporters have been getting kick backs from the public funds under many different guises... Can't wait for the report to come from the auditing firm. Hopefully we find out where the bodies are buried
Didn't take Durkin long to show her true colors. I can see why Attleboro didn't renew her contract and now we are stuck with her. Once again our School Committee and their so called "Search Committee" has recommended and picked the wrong person to lead the district.
How is Dr. Durkin going to get our students to attend school daily and be will to do the work required? Are the parents going to instill in their child(ren) the value of receiving an education?
Bottom line, students and parents MUST accept the responsibility and be accountable. Old saying: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."
It appears as the union wants business as usual. It also seems as though they want to continue with the poor situation in our schools as long as they get their way. Forget about the children they are so called protecting.
Why do we have a union hating troll posting here? Our working conditions are the children's learning conditions. If you don't care about teachers don't claim to care about the learners.

The district lied to the DESE, to the parents, and to the public. Is this the kind of behavior we can expect under Durkin's reign?
Apparently, Jon Mitchell chose a superintendent who shares his values.
Does anyone know when Bob Unger will write an editorial criticizing the union for standing in the way of the great Pia Durkin?
Liar, Liar, pants on fire.

Fasten your seat belts everyone as this is going to be a rough ride.
Hope there's a deep pool of subs....if things get worse
..could it be even more impossible to function as an educator in this city?
Is this Groundhog Day??? Feeling like I've been here before.
I sense an unfair labor practice coming.... why not, every other Supt has started their tenure this way....
And the rag is off to the races again!
