"In unity there is strength." by Nancy Smith

Yesterday at our monthly "lunch bunch" (a group of reitred NB teachers) our topic of conversation was mainly about what is going on in the New Bedford School Department. All of us agreed that we were happy to be retired, BUT several of us wanted to know if there is something that we can do to help. We want the teachers of New Bedford to know that you have our support and our prayers for what appears to be a very long road ahead. We know how hard you work and how little thanks or praise you get. You are brave for getting up each morning and trying to do your job even though time and again you have been told you are not capable of effective teaching. You have been criticized (crucified might be a better word) by the newspaper, the superintendent, and on the radio. The only advice that I can offer you is that you must stand together and support each other and your union president. Remember that "In unity there is strength."

Never give up! You are professionals, and most of all; YOU DO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!" You are the one that is "in the trenches" so to speak. You are the one dealing with the "day to day" events in your specific classroom. You are the decision maker that guides your learning activities!!

I agree with you Nancy. I for one will do anything to help support the teachers, as stated yesterday.

Absolutely Nancy! If retired NB teachers formed a coalition and voting block! You would soon get noticed and respected by the city Council and then you would be able to persuade the NB School Board to fulfill your wishes. Nothing will happen if folks do not care or stay involved.

I admire the educators. Hope they are aware that they are appreciated by most parents and grandparents. Frederick Douglass said " there is no change without struggle"

As a parent I support New Bedford teachers and I don't like what Dr. Durkin and Mayor Mitchell are doing to them.

Retired teachers, please take note: Talk show host, Phil Paleologis used his talk show yesterday to attack New Bedford teachers and the teacher's union.

He was like a rabid dog attacking Lou.

Phil Paleologis, owner of Shawmut dinner will never get a dime from me!

I would urge former teachers and parents to flood the School Committee, City Council and the Mayors office with letters, emails and phone calls (especially phone calls) to support us. We need the parents who see how hard we work to speak out for us. We love our students and work hard everyday to provide them with the best possible education. We are over capacity in our classrooms. The budget cuts impacted our special education department significantly. This in turn, leaves the classroom teachers with a high percentage of students with special needs in their classroom with minimum support from the over-stretched special educators. We need someone to support us! I have been teaching over 22 years and this is the first time in the system that I really feel the teachers need to take a stand and possible protest in some way. We will lose educators who just want to teach!!!

Awww its too bad Phil won't get your dime because he needs it to pay the taxes he hasn't paid in years. I have an idea Phil, how about you worry about paying your taxes and maybe we can put a teacher back in the classroom.

I strongly advise any NBPS teacher to boycott Phil's show and sponsors(who's buying armaments anyway?).....hit him in the wallet---don't eat at his diner either(doesn't he owe taxes?)

Phil is considered to be a joke in the community so no one really takes him seriously.

He liked to run his mouth but the guy has never been to a school committee meeting.

If Dr. D. wants rapid and robust achievement she MUST provide rapid and robust support to her staff.
