Every one should google the following key words:
Pia Dukin controversy
Pia Durkin Narragansett
Pia Durkin reprimand
Pia Durkin Attleboro
Pia Durkin student raped student controversy
Pia Durkin school lunch controversy
Pia Durkin micromanager.
John Mitchell is delusional.
Now that i've googled her past i realize Hiring how incompetent this mayor really is.
Larry Finnerty and Jack Nobrega have let us down.
He must be using some serious drugs. I do NOT have a single colleague who is SMILING but I have seen more than one brought to TEARS by the rigorous storm called Pia!
Mayor Mitchell has to be VERY out of touch with what is going on or being a typical politician. The morale in NBPS is the worst I have seen in 20 years. My colleagues in many school's around the city are telling me, they wake up with a sense of dread or sick to their stomach with the thought of going to school. We are miserable and fearful. After all is said and done, isn't this what the committee wanted when they hired her? There's none so blind as those who will not see!( MA Strand Vocab. Language Acquisition and Use 5b)
Mayor Mitchell should read NBEA Blogger for five minutes. I think I need to send him a letter.
Are you kidding me?
Is he serious???? If morale is better than ever then i must be missing something. I have never seen it this bad in 19 years!!!!!
He needs to open is eyes a little wider...
he must be talking about another department not school department
We need to get parents involved. We need to start calling home and telling them when meetings are. We need to go to school committee meetings in full force and show the bully down at PRAB that she cannot and will not do this to our children any longer. Some of our kids come from backgrounds that she could never imagine. The fact that some kids show up to school at all is incredible and I applaud them for it. I cannot and will not make my students hate school because some tyrant in an office is being a bully. In the state of Massachusetts, bullying is illegal. I hope she knows the types of people she is trying to silence because I assure you, she will have to murder me if she wants me to stop talking. As a resident of the city, she works for me. I don't work for her, I work for my kids. Welcome to New Bedford Pia Durkin. There's a reason she left Attleboro. New Bedford needs to stop scraping the bottom of the barrel and start finding quality individuals who will help and support our students and teachers.
Really???? Nightmares are destroying my sleep, the anxiety is so bad that I haven't been able to enjoy a full night's sleep since school started. The mayor needs to come out of his office more :/
He must be crazy. I have been working for the school department for 7 years & have never seen morale so low. Funny how these politians are full of bs, maybe the newspaper could do a honest job of looking into this.
This is the first time ever that I am not happy to go to work and count down the days till Friday.
Mitchell is out of touch, incompetent, and delusional! Moral is at an all time low! We have leftovers at Prab -who is a bully! Yeah, our moral is null!
Ha, Ha ,Ha! I hope he's joking!
Mitchell has made that ridiculous statement several times. My guess is that he hasn't talked with any teachers.
Oh my gosh! As we neared the end of our last school year, the teachers and students felt the hard-hitting impact. Morale was so low that people were throwing each other under the bus to save their own skins. This sentiment was so bad, many were ready to throw in the towel. Others were left in limbo and had no support. Also, during this time, many positions were cut, eliminated, and contracts were non-renewed. NB lost many wonderful and committed educators. We gave everything we could to preserve and strengthen our district. But, that was not enough. The Commissioner of Education should be informed to reestablish what could have been, repair the damage, and bring back those we lost. We need strong leadership, and people who embrace the richness and diversity of our New Bedford population. How can large class sizes, minimal resources, and unreal expectations maximize academic success? This is a crazy mixed-up system that just does not make sense. Speaking for myself, I never realized the capacity of commitment I felt for my district, underperforming school, and the population of students that I taught. I was willing to share some of my earnings in order to prevent losing another educator. I would have stayed in this district and worked twice as hard, as I was committed to my profession. I know many of you feel the same way. Yet, our pleas remain unheard and each time the higher ups open their mouths, we are devalued even further. This has to stop. United we stand, divided we fall. Just say the word, and I am on board 100% I will always feel a sense of loyalty and belonging to this district, and am willing to fight along side of you for justice our students and the teachers who educate, or want to educate them here in the district of New Bedford!
Will he be giving an uplifting speech when the scores are released this week? If not, my morale will plummet further into the pit of doom. Sorry for any typos--I've taken up drinking on Sundays since school started. Must be due to my "high" morale.
Staff leaving in ambulances, clerks reduced to tears, teachers in constant fear, gun shots near a school, last minute hires, last minute fires, late protocols implemented, lack of resources, testing madness, stagnant pay(or actual reduction)....and morale has never been better? I've been around along time...it's never been worse. I think the year of the strike was actually better.
strike ...what a great idea! sign me up
There are many who have been in this system for a long time , and I can assure you from all I've spoken to , morale is at an all time low . I have not spoken to one teacher who loves their job . It is so sad . We are professionals and should be treated as such .
A suggestion. Everyone should post on their fb page for all parents to see, what is going on in New Bedford and how low the morale is amongst teachers and why. As teachers we can complain and in return be accused of being lazy or not caring about education, but if parents in New Bedford start complaining about policies there might be a chance for change.
omg!! Are we talking about prison camps or schools? This is getting a little ridiculous now!!
I have been working in the system for over 15 years and I love my job. With that said, I think it is an absolute disgrace that the City has chosen this previously fired individual who could not manage to perform while maintaining a professional relationship with the staff. I live in the city, pay taxes in the city and I am a parent in THIS city. I have a mortgage to pay and my job means a lot. However I think as a union, we need to start organizing and gain strength. We need to stick together. Too often you hear people in the system bash the union claiming that "they really don't do anything". Ummm, WE are the union and we need to start moving and pushing our weight around.
Mitchell doesn't give a $&@& about teachers..he only cares about his rich friends from dartmouth and Boston..and getting them jobs..
Give them enough rope, and they'll hang themselves. Yet, others are being hurt in the process. Why is the Mayor sealing his own coffin? Can I offer this guy a cup of "reality" coffee?
we should be happy to have a job. I have been at Roosevelt for 11 years and I'm very happy. I get tired of listening to all the mal-contents.
You are very lucky, then. 11 years of success is something to celebrate! What is the secret?
....and Mitchell is the greatest Mayor New Bedford has seen!! I think he is a great man! NOT!!!!! Hey John , GET A CLUE!!!
I moved to this city when I came to teach here. I wanted to be a part of the community in which I taught. I wanted my tax dollars to be spent in this here. I wanted to embrace the diversity and learn more about the richness of cultures. I want to grow old here. It was a false sense of security. Corrupt businesses have no heart, and to the stakeholders, education is a business!
Ownership
for the work ahead: Is she trying to deflect the spotlight that is shining on her? We, at the bottom level, feel the impact of each and every action the district makes in haste! Who does she think she is kidding? I take offense to this statement! Without ownership, unresolved issues continue to perpetuate. This behavior is NOT acceptable!
It's too easy to blame others or entities beyond our control. In truth, blaming depletes our energy, making it even more difficult to tackle the hard work to which we must commit. That's simply no longer an option. We will move this district from chronic underperformance to a level of true excellence through a new level of commitment, understanding that the road ahead will require us to address real challenges, make difficult choices, and see ourselves as responsible for bringing about and sustaining the changes we need.
Good luck, New Bedford.
I'm so tired of being observed by a team of admins who have no clue how to teach my subject matter to this population yet are seemingly experts on how to evaluate my pedagogy. Yet I have to post my agenda, mastery objective, standard, and essential question on the board everyday for these walk throughs since they sure as the hell don't benefit students in any way.
They waltz into my room, ask a disengaged student what they are learning about, checks or my mastery objective, and then walk out into the hallway o basically talk s$&@ about me foe 3 minutes before moving on to the next victim.
No direct or useful constructive feedback is given. All we get is a general reflection on the school as a whole, it's Suharto joke -a total waste of time and salary.
I wish they would jut leave me alone to do my job.
