School Committee Candidates: Bios and Positions

The fact that only two of the candidates believe morale is at the lowest point since the strike in the 70s is alarming.

With the exception of Amaral and Janson, the other candidates have turned their backs on New Bedford teachers.

Obviously, Finnerty is pandering to the UIA and the coalition for social justice. Won't help you though, Larry, Marlene is still going to do everything she can to boot you off the committee.

Jill kissed up to them too and look where she ended up.

Pastori and Mojica-Mosquea Marlene Pollocks choices - that should say it all.

End of an ERROR for Nobrega and Finnerty, get some sleep Mr. Nobrega-and go play with your grandchild Mr. Finnerty. You'll send it to Catholic School anyway.

Brian Pastori is INNOVATION MAN.

I'm voting for Josh and only Josh. The others are clearly a bunch of losers.

Tell all voters to PLUNK for Josh Amaral. If the votes get split--the incumbents will stay and only one newbie will have a chance.

Finnerty has sold his soul to the UIA and turned his back on New Bedford educators. We need the latest in technology for every classroom to prepare our students.

Dr. Finnerty received a handsome salary from the NBPS as an administrator. Shame shame!

Guess more innovation schools are on the horizon depending on how Mitchell votes.

Here is a suggestion. Anyone who runs for school committee must substitute at any of the under-performing schools, including the Gomes, Hayden-MacFaden, Hathaway, Parker, or any of the Middle Schools or High School for a period of two weeks per year, with one week of continuous-same classroom setting.

You will be evaluated on whether or not your students show proficiency on the rigorous content you provide during your tenure these weeks.

Failure to provide proficiency to the heterogeneous groups of your non-advanced placement students will mean you get to try again until you succeed.

The same rule should hold true for anyone running for office and any PRAB administrator who is compelled to weigh in on the woes of our classroom teachers or school system.

Lets walk the walk together. Participants will truly not get an appreciation for your teachers until and unless you walk a couple miles in their shoes.

It is only after you have participated in these activities that your recommendations can be credible and worthy enough to be considered at any forum on how to improve our schools and educate our children.

Here is another suggestion. You may want to consider looking for a part time job. Whether or not you know it,you're about to be fired from your regular full time job for absenteeism.

Sign up for the program or bite your tongue.

^^ think mandatory subbing for SC at least once a year or so, even if it's just for a day, is a great idea

"Let's walk the walk together"....and attack prab people.

MM on Q.6,7,9. Remarkably Ill informed, dangerous or both. And as for Pastori, he claims to be pro union, until it comes time to honor the union member concerns.

Note that not all innovation schools are a bad idea. Just when they seek to destroy an existing school with political games.

I agree that all school committee members should have to teach at least a few days a year and be evaluated using the same rubric. They must teach one grade level every year (year one, elementary, year 2, middle, year 3, high school).

I'd love to see the look on Marlene Pollacks face when a student tells her to F off. Since she understands that this language is simply "the way they talk" these days, she probably won't have a problem with it and will resume teaching all students with varying needs and languages with ease.

Here is another suggestion. Before any student can attend an up-coming school year, their parent, parents or caretaker must attend a mandatory meeting in late summer to review the MCAS scores of their children's school.

All parent and caretaker questions must be addressed.

Only after a parent or caretaker attends some sort of meeting may their child attend school. If any disability creates an issue I'm sure we have enough ideas to make some work-arounds.

The city and school department needs to place an onus on the parents in registering and understanding the school's and community's expectation for their children success making for a productive year.

During the meeting school administrators explain the specifics and meanings of the state-of-the-school according to all categories W, NI, P, A, and SGP, among other pressing school issues.

Also explained with documentation available should be the meaning and implications of their children's MCAS results once they are available. We need to be SMART about it!

Explicitly explained are what the results mean at the grade level their child is at and what it may mean for their future given nationwide data that is available. This is key.

Follow-up meetings after each child walks with their own "data" home, with administrator or guidance counselor as required and scheduled by parents and caretakers. May it require some administrators and guidance counselor staying later than they normally do? Yes. It is worth it.

Schools need to confirm that parents and caretakers received and comprehended the content of their child's MCAS data. We have the technology.

I mentioned what it may mean to administrators, and may it require some parents and caretakers to take an hour or two out of work? Probably. Is it worth it? I think so, given what I'm reading about everyone's concern. Your employer may applaud it.

Does it put more burden on the administrators at the school and PRAB level? No, it just redirects some of their priorities, in a more productive citywide and community focus.

As our peers first and leaders second suggest, it is time to think out-of-box. Well, I hope this idea meets the criteria of being realistic and also out-of-the-box.

Sorry to inform you but Jill never kissed up to them. Neither did she support the idea of a school within a school. Mrs. Ussach never kissed up to anyone. That is why the Coalition for Social Justice and Marlene and Jack Liveramento wanted her out of office. Well now she has been out for sometime and look at what your in group has done for you and your Union. Enjoy your results.

Jill is not a person who ever kissed up. Why do you think that she lost. Because she would not play their political games.

Anonymous said...

^ you've got to be kidding. Jill sucked up to everybody and was an embarrassment on the committee. She never supported teachers and was in Portia bonner's pocket.

If Jill Ussach were on the school committee today, she'd be playing the denial game just as the others are doing now. She be saying that we all have to work together and give the Durkin a chance. She did the exact same thing when bonner was superintendent knowing full well that Old Portia was a horrible.

Jill was useless on the committee. She did not support teachers any more then Lavimento or pollock do.

To suggest that things would be different if Jill Ussack were on the committee is ludicrous. I am glad she is gone, gone, gone. She would not have helped us at all.
