Rigor is another buzzword that means absolutely nothing. We've heard it all before: A former N.B. superintendent's buzzword was "raise the bar" and Portia Bonner was the "change agent".
Hey Pia Durkin, how about just letting teachers teach. And while you're at it, give us the resources we need to do our jobs.
I wish we hard a rigorous mayor that would get tough on crime. Why can't the rigor mayor bring down the crime rate in New Bedford? That's what he campaigned on but the man in the suit has never addressed the issue.
My educational journey included several cohorts with an accelerated path to graduation. The coursework was rigorous, but it looked nothing like Pia's rigor. My professors were professional, encouraging, and supportive. There is no comparison here. Rather than inspire her educators, she chooses to frighten them. The writing is on the wall and this is just more fluff for the media. She is being paid an exorbitant salary to clean house, and she will keep up her end of the bargain to Mayor and SC. This is the work of a heartless woman.
There is nothing wrong with the Common Core or the concept of rigorous instruction. Most of us have been doing that for the majority of our careers. The only difference is that we haven't been assaulted by this nonsensical term as it relates to our instruction. At a recent NBHS staff meeting, the r-word was used a multitude of times, whether it fit the sentence or not. It is challenging instruction, that's all. It is not something that can be judged by some ridiculous Rigor Rubric, since "challenging" can mean different things to different students.
Durkin's "rigor" math lesson was a joke. So she put a typed math problem on the elmo, read the problems to the school committee (which they couldn't solve when she asked them the answer, and viola! RIGOR RIGOR RIGOR!!! And to see how impressed Marlene was was the biggest joke of all.

Pia's "Rigor" is nothing more then good old fashioned excuse for "Bullying".
